MUENSTER — Muenster has won its last four meetings with Lindsay, but don’t tell Brady Carney that.
The Muenster coach throws out the previous four meetings over the last two years, and, as a matter of fact, all of the previous meetings between the two teams in the past anytime he looks ahead at the Kraut Bowl.
The long standing rivalry is one that fans, players and coaches can throw out the record books on and Carney knows his players will be in for a dog fight again when they hit the field at Henry B. Schroeder Field in Lindsay at 7:30 p.m. Friday night.
“It’s a rivalry game,” said Carney, who spent four years at Lindsay as offensive coordinator before being hired at Muenster. “I don’t see any kind of edge going back to past wins and losses. It’s a battle every week.”
Carney and his Hornets have had the Knight’s number over the last two years. Muenster has ended the Knights season in the playoffs both years while also taking care of business by winning during district play as well. The last time Lindsay defeated the Hornets was in a 21-14 district showdown in Lindsay in 2009.
“It’s always a battle,” Carney said. “Things have gone both ways different years. We just need to show up Friday night and try to play mistake free football.”
Mistake free football is something Carney has been preaching all week as the Hornets try to fix some turnover woes and mental mistakes.
Despite a 28-14 win over Valley View last week, the Hornets spent the 10 minutes immediately after the game doing conditioning drills as Muenster wasted no time in preparing for its next game.
“We are still trying to find our identity as a team,” Carney said. “We didn’t act the way we should act in Muenster. I didn’t see us fighting together. I saw us fighting as individuals and not all 11 on one page.”
In addition to grooming a somewhat young team, Carney has had to navigate his way through several key injuries early on.
All-state linebacker Andy Flusche, once slated as a running back, has been moved to offensive line as has Cole Walterscheid, who was expected to start at tight end.
“We have had to move a lot of people around because of injuries,” Carney said. “That’s part of the game.”
The injuries have changed the offensive game plan, as well. Hornet running back Trevor Hess carried the ball 28 times last week - the most touches of any ball carrier in Carney’s time as head coach.
“We don’t have as many people involved as in the past,” Carney said. “We would like to spread it out a little more but the injuries have hurt. It has put us in a bind.”
Injuries, win streaks or new positions, throw out the record books for Friday’s game.
“Lindsay is a very good team,” Carney said. “They have a lot of depth, they are fast and they play extremely hard. It’s going to be a battle.”
