GAINESVILLE — The Lady Leopards weren’t going to let it happen again.
With Gainesville up four points late in the third set with a chance to sweep, Krum began to rally – similar to what happened in a five-set win against Sanger on Tuesday.
This time the Lady Leopards ended things there with a 4-2 run to close out play, giving them a 25-16, 25-23, 25-23 District 9-3A sweep over the Lady Bobcats on Friday at Gainesville High School.
Gainesville (29-7, 3-1) saw Krum (1-3 in District 9-3A play) rally in the third set, cutting a four-point lead down to one at 21-20.
Lady Leopard junior Whytneigh Duffie scored the last two points of the final and deciding set on kills for Gainesville, slamming the door shut on any Lady Bobcat comeback.
The Lady Leopards will travel to play Bridgeport at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Gainesville set itself up for a sweep with a ferocious offensive attack and a steady defense.
Kiarah Manuel had nine kills to lead the Lady Leopards. Duffie had six kills and Sarah Gerken added 19 assists.
The Lady Leopards needed a rally of their own in the second set. Down 8-4 early, Gainesville tied the game on four consecutive points, culminating with a block from Brittany Royal.
Gainesville allowed Krum to take a three-point lead at 15-12 after its early rally before a Manuel kill ended the Lady Bobcat rally. The Lady Leopards closed the set on a 13-8 with Ariannah Kemp getting a block for the winning point.
It was all Lady Leopards in the first set. Gainesville led by nine points on four different occasions, including the final score of the set 25-16. Payton Cassidy gave Gainesville the win with a nifty hit that floated over the outstretched arms of Sanger’s blockers.
