MacPherson: Basketball season is heating up

GAINESVILLE — We are after Christmas so that can mean only one thing: it’s basketball season.

Sure basketball has been in full force for nearly two months now, but now it gets serious.

There’s a number of district tilts Friday and many other on the horizon and there’s no shortage of storylines, either.

The biggest game tonight will be played off of FM 922 when the Era Lady Hornets play host to Lindsay as both teams begin league play.

First-year Era coach Don Neu spent 14 seasons coaching in Lindsay before departing for Era in April. He accumulated 253 wins, two state tournament berths and a state title in 2007 while at Lindsay. Both teams have the talent to compete for a postseason spot so expect tonight’s game to be a nail-biter. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m Friday.

Fresh off of a championship at the NCTC Holiday Classic, Gainesville will play host to Decatur Friday. The two teams have combined for three of Muenster’s four losses, though all were close games.

The Lady Leopards appeared to get things going at the Holiday Classic as a some-what young team is continuing to develop. Expect the Lady Leopards to be postseason bound - Friday is just the start.

Speaking of aforementioned Muenster, the Lady Hornets will host Collinsville tonight. Muenster got a chance to scout the Lady Pirates at the Holiday Classic on a run to the final. The Lady Hornets are the team to beat in their district. I think they prove that Friday.

Callisburg is two games into district play, but they don’t get any easier from there. Callisburg will host Bells as its tries to stay undefeated in league play.

On the boys side, Gainesville will travel to Wichita Falls Hirschi for a non-ditrict bout. The Leopards are trying to get back on track after a New Years Eve scare from Lindsay. They start district on Jan. 15.

While football season is gone and baseball/softball season is still two months and 30 degrees away, basketball is heating up. Try to make a game to support your local team if you can.
