Gainesville — The Gainesville girls soccer team got off to a strong start at the Big Red Soccer Classic this week, winning each of its first two matches in convincing fashion.
The Lady Leopards overcame chilly conditions with a 5-1 win against Dennison Thursday and a 6-0 victory against Anna Friday at Leopards Stadium.
With the wins, Gainesville improved to 7-3 on the season.
In the tournament opener against the Lady Yellow Jackets, senior forward Whytneigh Duffie led the way for the Lady Leopards, scoring three goals. Senior midfielder Estephanie Martin and sophomore forward Reagan Woodlock also added to the scoring with one goal each.
Gainesville stayed hot in the tournament’s second game against the Lady Coyotes. GHS jumped out to a 5-0 halftime lead and kept the AHS offense at bay from start to finish in the 6-1 victory.
The Lady Leopards will complete play at the classic Saturday when it faces Princeton. Play is scheduled to kick off at 12:30 p.m. at Leopard Stadium.
