Argyle —
The Gainesville Lady Leopards hopes for their first district championship in more than 10 years, slipped through their fingers Tuesday night…literally.
The Lady Leopards had trouble holding onto the ball most of the night, en route to double-digit turnovers and a 46-32 loss to the Argyle Lady Eagles.
Gainesville (20-8 overall, 6-2 district) started strong offensively, taking an 11-10 lead after the first quarter thanks to seven of Ariannah Kemp’s team-high 21 points.
But the Lady Eagles returned the favor in the second frame, taking a 22-20 lead into the locker room at the half.
In the second quarter, Gainesville stretched their lead to 14-10 thanks to an early 3-pointer from Brittany Royal. Destini Flowers and Zhanice Lane each had buckets in the period as did Kemp who hit a layup with 22 seconds left in the half to cut the deficit to two points.
But in the second half, Argyle (15-14, 7-1) held the Lady Leopards to just 12 points en route to victory.
The Lady Leopards struggled to kept their paws on the ball when making passes in the paint, giving numerous possessions back to the Lady Eagles, who were led by Delaney Sain’s 17 points.
Gainesville managed just two field goals in the entire second half, the first of which did not come until the 1:20 mark of the third quarter when Kemp scored on a layup.
Before that, the Lady Leopards had just two points, coming from free throws by Royal. Kemp later stole a pass with less than 30 seconds on the clock and took it coast-to-coast for a layup to cut the deficit to 35-26.
But the offense’s struggles continued in the final period of play for Gainesville, who added just six more points to the scoreboard, all on free throws from Kemp. The team failed to record a field goal in the fourth.
Kemp led the team with 21 points, Royal finished with seven and Flowers and Lane each added two.
