Argyle —
A 12-2 fourth quarter run allowed the Argyle Eagles to rally against the Gainesville Leopards for a 67-59 victory Tuesday night.
Gainesville (19-8 overall, 4-2 district) held a 51-49 lead to start the fourth thanks to a 3-pointer from Denzel Johnson, one of eight 3s on the night for the Leopards.
But the Eagles held tight on defense and scored the next 10 points en route to a 59-51 lead while holding the Leopards to just three field goals in the final quarter.
The Leopards cut it to five (61-56) with 2:38 left after a 3-pointer from Demetrius Franklin. But two missed free throws by David Moore at the 2:17 mark would have cut the deficit to one possession. Argyle then tacked on six more points for the win.
Gainesville took a 10-6 lead early in the first quarter thanks to five points from D.J. Harris who finished with a team-high 20 points, including seven in the first quarter.
But Argyle (22-7, 6-0) rallied for a 16-14 advantage after the first thanks to a 3-pointer from Connor York with four seconds on the clock.
In the second frame, the Leopards shots continued to fall as jumpers from Jonathan Mendez and Moore and a 3-ball from Harris gave the Leopards a 23-19 lead with 5:34 left in the half.
Both teams battled to a 29-29 tie late in the quarter with the Leopards eventually trailing 35-32.
But a key 3-pointer from Johnson with 15 seconds remaining knotted the game at 35-35. Johnson scored the final six points of the half for the Leopards.
In the third period, Harris knocked down a shot from beyond the arc and a jumper later on to give the Leopards a 40-38 lead. Moore hit two free throws to stretch it to 42-38 Leopards.
Argyle fought back with a 9-3 run for a 47-46 lead with 2:05 left. Franklin added a layup and Conner Markle swished two free throws to regain the lead (48-47) for the Leopards heading into the final frame.
For Gainesville, Harris scored 20, Moore added 15, Johnson had 13, Franklin finished with seven and Mendez and Markle each tacked on two.
The Gainesville JV fell to Argyle, 46-34. The Eagles jumped out to a 19-8 lead after the first quarter and held on for the victory.
Landon Bond led the way with 16 and Ethan Anderson had five. Lilton Moore and Jordan Hall both scored three.
The freshman team slipped by Argyle, 36-33. Malik Johnson led the way with 18 and Rocky Salazar added seven. Devin Mims scored four and Brady Butcher tossed in three. Carson Markle and Josh Manuel each scored two.
