BRIDGEPORT — Adam Berryman ran for 159 yards and five touchdowns as Gainesville cruised to a 49-14 win over Bridgeport while claiming an outright District 9-3A title in the process.
The Leopards clinched at least a share of the league championship with a win over Krum last week but needed Friday night’s win in Bridgeport to win it outright.
Gainesville (10-0, 4-0) will play Frisco Lone Star at 7:30 p.m. at Denton High School’s Bronco Stadium in the Region II-3A playoffs next Friday.
Berryman scored on runs of 1, 4, 9, 30 and 49 yards in the win for Gainesville. The junior’s 1-yard score came two-plays into the Leopards’ first possession after a special teams mistake set them up at the Bridgeport 5-yard line.
Running back Jacob Royal had a 58-yard touchdown run – his second score of the night – to make it 49-14 with 10:29 left in the game. Royal also scored on a pick-six interception return in the third quarter to put the Leopards up 35-14 at the time.
Leopards quarterback Denzel Johnson was fairly quiet on the night, rushing for 28 yards. He added 66 yards on 7 of 9 passing.
The win means the first undefeated regular season for the Leopards since 2005 – the year the Leopards last reached the state final.
