Denison —
Last weekend the Lady Leopards soccer team went on four game winning streak to capture the championship trophy at the Buffalo Wild Wings Denison Soccer Tournament. It is the first ever championship by a girls soccer team at Gainesville.
Gainesville opened their tournament against the Denison Yellow Jackets on Thursday afternoon. Whytneigh Duffie put the Leopards on the board in the 18th minute. Maria Castillo passed Duffie the ball who flicked it to herself and ripped it in the opposite upper 90 with her left foot. Duffie would score again in the second half off a cross from Marisol Chavez.
Friday evening the Lady Leopards defeated Bryan Adams from Dallas 5-0.
Senior forward Rubi Saenz was fouled in the box 14 minutes into the game and the Lady Leopards were awarded a penalty kick. Duffie put it away for an early 1-0 lead. Unfortunately they were unable to rack up anymore first half goals and went into halftime with a slim lead. That lead grew quickly when Chavez sent a beautiful through ball to a quick Duffie who tapped it around the goalkeeper and then slid the ball into the back of the net. Just ten minutes later, Chavez would cut around a Bryan Adams defender and send the ball over the keepers head. There was seven minutes remaining when Duffie and junior forward Jordan Garcia combined for some one-touch passing about 20 yards away from goal. The last pass was to Rubi Saenz who was able to chip the keeper. Selena Espinosa scored the fifth goal of the game with a first time shot from the top of the box.
Next up was the junior varsity team from Prosper High School. Chavez broke open the scoring with a free kick from about 25 yards out. The ball was well out of reach for the Prosper goalkeeper and easily found the back of the net. Late in the first half Chavez took another free kick that rebounded back towards the charging Lady Leopards. Duffie was able to tap the ball in for the second goal. Early in the second half, Garcia and Chavez doubled up on a Prosper midfielder and were able to steal the ball away. Chavez was able to find Duffie flying down the field for another through ball that found the back of the net. Selena Espinosa would also fight hard for a ball, win and score. With just three minutes remaining Chavez and Duffie would connect once more for the teams final goal.
With three shutouts the Lady Leopards were heading back to their third straight championship game hoping for different results. Gainesville faced off against John Paul out of Plano, a TAPPS Division I school and pulled out an exciting 2-1 victory for the championship.
It did not take long for the Lady Leopards to attack the John Paul Lady Cardinals. Just four minutes into the game Gainesville was awarded a free kick about 30 yards away from goal. Chavez hit the ball just right and it sailed over the goalkeeper and into the opposite upper 90 corner, catching the Lady Cards off guard with some quick one-touch passing and great team movement, Duffie was able to find Rubi Saenz on a run into the box. Saenz was able to easily slide the ball past the keeper and score.
That would be all of the scoring for the remainder of the first half. The Lady Leopard defenders, Amanda Eddowes, Brooke McCoy, Mady Cassidy and Amanda Ginther, were able to hold the Lady Cardinals to four first half shots on goal.
The intensity and aggressive play picked up in the second half. Neither team was going to back down and both fought hard for the championship. The Lady Cardinals were able to get a few good shots on goal but Alexus Espinosa came up with some huge saves. Gainesville was also able to produce some good scoring opportunities that went just wide of the goal. With just two minutes remaining there was a small break in the midfield and defense and John Paul was able to get a goal to make it 2-1. The Lady Leopards went into extreme defensive mode and made sure that John Paul wouldn’t get another opportunity. The entire teams hard work paid off and Gainesville held on to win the championship.
“Losing the last two championship games was hard but we came into this game with a better mindset of what needed to be done and we were able to accomplish it,” Gainesville coach Heather Medlen said. “I am so very proud of this team. They have worked so hard and completely deserve this trophy.”
The Lady Leopards are now 11-2 on the season.
