Lady Leopards move into first place

Krum — Playing in its third district game of the season, the Gainesville girls basketball team used efficient offense and strong rebounding to defeat Krum 56-45 Tuesday night.

With the win, the Lady Leopards (11-7, 2-1) moved into a first-place tie with Krum and Decatur in District 9-3A.

“We showed a lot of effort tonight, and I think that was key,” Gainesville head coach Alan Driggers said. “Any time we have more than one player end up near double digit rebounds, we’re going to be able to beat a lot of teams. We executed really well on offense and played pretty good defense tonight.”

Gainesville used plenty of  strong passes around the basket to fuel its offense early on. Chandler Kemp found Hali Smith down low for a lay up to give GHS its first points of the game and lay ups from Cozy Avery and Ariannah Kemp inside gave the Lady Leopards a 6-5 edge. GHS scored its next four points in transition, with Chandler Kemp hitting Brittany Royal for an open lay up after taking the ball upcourt and Smith scoring in the open court following an Avery steal.

Holding a 15-11 lead after the first quarter, the Leopards turned to Avery down low early in the second. Avery scored on two straight put backs following Gainesville misses and made a lay up in transition to give Gainesville a 30-23 lead going into halftime.

Krum made its best effort to secure a comeback in the third, outscoring Gainesville 11-8. KHS got to the free throw line often after the break, scoring six points in the third quarter from the line. Royal helped GHS hold its lead, hitting a jump shot at the 6:30 mark and hitting a lay up following an offensive rebound from Avery. Krum made a push in the quarter’s final two minutes, scoring on a lay up, 3-pointer and a free throw with one second remaining to cut the deficit heading into the fourth.

Gainesville never faltered, opening the final frame with an 15-6 run. Chandler Kemp hit a pair of free throws with seven minutes left before Royal stole a pass from a Krum player attempting to keep the ball in bounds and hit an open jump shot. Ariannah Kemp took over from there, scoring Gainesville’s next six points. Kemp first hit a lay up following an impressive crossover dribble and spin move, made a jump shot after cutting to the middle of the key and made two free throws to extend Gainesville’s lead to 12.

Krum began to press in the final minutes, but Gainesville held its own. Kemp snuck behind the KHS defense for a lay up and the team hit five of its last six free throws to preserve the win.

Ariannah Kemp led all scorers with 20 points, while Avery and Royal each finished with 13 points. Chandler Kemp had eight points and Smith added four.

The Lady Leopards will continue district play at 6:15 p.m. Friday when it hosts Bridgeport.
