The Sacred Heart Tigers rolled up 356 yards of total offense and limited the Petrolia Pirates offense to just one score in a 40-6 rout to open the 2010 season Friday in Petrolia.
Sacred Heart (1-0) rushed for 240 yards and passed for 116 more. The Tiger defense held Petrolia to just 54 yards on the ground and 74 through the air.
The Tigers scored early in the first quarter on a 25-yard TD pass from Matt Hesse to Bob Bartush. Hesse’s extra point kick made it 7-0.
The lead grew to 14-0 midway through the second quarter as Hesse scored from six yards out.
Late in the half, Chad Walterscheid picked off a tipped pass and ran 35 yards for another touchdown to make it 21-0 at the half.
There was even more scoring in the second half. Hesse added a 5-yard touchdown run that pushed the Tiger lead to 27-0.
Petrolia (0-1) finally got on the scoreboard with 3:39 remaining in the third quarter as Brady Mataska threw a 16-yard TD pass to Bryce Tucker.
Sacred Heart added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter. With 9:41 remaining, Hesse scored on a 52-yard run. Later, Austin Miller ran in from 2 yards out for the final margin.
Hesse finished with 152 yards rushing and 116 yards passing for the Tigers. Josh Biffle carried the ball 14 times for 60 yards. Bartush had two catches for 53 yards and Walterscheid had three receptions for 26 yards.
Defensively, Hesse, Walterscheid and Biffle all had interceptions.
Sacred Heart will travel to Lindsay this week to face the Knights.
