GAINESVILLE — Welcome to Cooke County. But for today, rename it Cook County.
After leading averaging a double-double and leading his team to a surprise District 13-1A championship, Lindsay Lyndon Cook was named The Register’s All-Cooke County Player of the Year.
Cook, a 6-foot-6 sophomore, averaged 18.3 points, 16.7 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 4.3 blocks per game - all team-highs - in leading the Knights to the Region II-1A area playoffs.
While helping a young Lindsay team to a district title and a playoff berth, Cook tallied 30 double-doubles, recorded 20-plus rebounds in 14 games and had a triple-double in a double overtime win over rival Muenster when he tallied 13 blocks.
Perhaps it was a lifetime of good coaching that sparked Cook’s performance this year as his father, Lindsay head coach Lynn Cook, was named the All-Cooke County Coach of the Year. The elder Cook helped a team with no seniors to a 7-1 district record and a district title.
Gainesville’s David Moore was named the All-Cooke County Offensive Most Valuable Player. The senior averaged 13.8 points, 5.4 assists and 5.3 rebounds per game in helping the Leopards to the playoffs.
A four-year basketball letterman, Moore will play football at East Central Oklahoma next year.
Muenster’s Cole Walterscheid got the nod for the All-Cooke County Defensive MVP - the same honor he claimed in football. The 6-foot-6 junior held down the paint for the Hornets with 3.2 blocks and 1.7 steals per game. On offense he also averaged 14.4 points per game.
Lindsay freshman Andy Dieter was named the All-Cooke County Newcomer of the Year. The Knight frosh averaged 6.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.
Earning first-team all-county was Denzel Johnson (Gainesville), Avery Fortenberry (Era), Kedrick Boaz (Lindsay), Kollin Meyer (Valley View) and Trevor Hess (Muenster).
Earning second-team all-county was Demetrius Franklin (Gainesville), Austin Hennigan (Muenster), Hayden Schilling (Sacred Heart), Zach Mlinar (Lindsay) and Austin Collett (Valley View).
