Lindsay —
The Lindsay Lady Knights are on a mission. They have entered
nine track meets this spring including the postseason and have yet to
lose. If they wrap up number 10 on Saturday it would give them their
first state championship in five years.
The state track meet will be held this weekend, May 11-12 in Austin on
the campus of the University of Texas.
In 2007 the Lindsay girls won their last track title and only fell by
one point in 2011, but they have not had a year like the one they are
putting together in 2012. It will not be easy but Lindsay coach Don
Neu feels they have another good chance to bring home a championship.
“I think we do. I believe it’s going to take 50 to 55 points to win,”
Neu said. “I think Snook has a chance to get that many points and I
think we have a chance. The mile relay is going to be very important.
We are going to have to win it or at least be in second place.”
Six girls including one alternate will try to get the job done
beginning early Friday morning. Lauren Gibbs and Megan Holt will start
things off with the two mile run Friday. Gibbs has dominated the 3200
meter run this season and according to Neu she will have a good chance
in Austin.
After an early Friday morning, the Lady Knights will have to wait
another 24 hours before coming back to the track. Senior Megan
Caillier will kick things off a little after noon Saturday with the
800 meter run and a little more than an hour later she will run the
400 meter.
Caillier has owned the 800 meter run in 2012 finishing first everytime
except once.
“I think we have a shot at the two mile and mile and I think Megan has
a good shot in the 800,” Neu said. “We also have a shot in the mile
relay. We are going to have to run our best, but I think we can run
with them.”
The mile and mile relay will conclude things around 3 o’clock Saturday
afternoon. It will probably all come down to the mile relay team of
Katie Arendt, Shannah Daymude, Gibbs and Caillier. Lindsay is
currently six seconds behind Hamlin in the 4X400 after the regional
times were turned in. Knowing exactly what they need to do at that
time might be just what Lindsay needs though to possibly bring home a
state championship.
“It’s senior loaded, several of our seniors have been there and I
really think they would like to finish their high school career with a
state championship,” Neu said. “They know it’s within reach and I
think they are going to run their best times and that’s all you can
ask them to do.”
