Muenster —
The Muenster Lady Hornets advanced to the state golf tournament last
week in Austin, played at the local Lion’s Municipal Course.
After qualifying in the bottom tier of the eight team field, the Lady
Hornets jumped up to third place by posting a 398. However, fourth,
fifth, and sixth were all within five strokes.
The red team posted another 398 on day two only to be beaten out by
one shot, just missing the bronze medal. Memphis 348-337/685 easily
claimed first place, followed by Grapeland 372-352/ 724, Gruver
400-395/795 and Muenster 398-398/796.
The Lady Hornets were once again led by Sophomore Erin Hess 82-80/162, followed by seniors Andi Hess 107-101/208 and Chloe Schneider 107-105/212, and juniors Payton Sanders 102-112/ 214 and Miranda Pagel 112-112/224.
In individual competition, Erin Hess came up one stroke short of
claiming the state championship. However, the drama was not over, as
Mandy Mayo from Paducah also finished tied for second with an
82-80/162 to tie for the silver medal. The two girls began a sudden
death playoff starting on the tenth hole. Erin played four perfect
shots and tapped in a par while Mayo missed the green and made bogey.
Erin clinched second place on the first playoff hole, bringing home
the silver medal.
The prospects for 2013 look promising for the Lady Hornets. "The loss
of the two playoff experienced seniors Andi Hess and Chloe Schneider
will be hard to replace,” Muenster golf coach Dans Hamric said. “We
will need lots of help from the rest of the team and the incoming
freshmen. We can't wait until next year.”
