Austin —
With the most perfect conditions they have seen all year the
Lindsay Lady Knights took advantage getting off to a tremendous start
in their quest for a state track title Friday morning. The 3200-meter
team of Lauren Gibbs and Megan Holt finished second and fourth to give
Lindsay an early 12 points in the team standings. Gibbs second place
finish was her best personal time of 11:47.
“Lauren and Megan ran a perfect race, they are very experienced and it
showed today,” Lindsay track coach Don Neu said. “They ran their race
and did not worry about anybody else and I could not be more proud of
them.”
With cool tempertures and overcast skies Holt and Gibbs set their own
pace starting in the back of the field but began to make their move
late, running in the third and fourth postions most of the race until
Gibbs overtook Hamlin’s Jacqueline Villarreal late in the final lap to
claim second place. Villarreal ended up three seconds behind Gibbs in
third position and three seconds ahead of Holt. Holt finished with a
time of 11:53.
“I was really wanting to come into today and redeem myself,” Gibbs
said. “The last two years at cross country I haven’t done well and
this year I had mono. I knew I could perform better [at cross country]
but I couldn’t because I was sick. Track is my favorite and I wanted
this bad. I knew what I had to do when I came out here and I wanted to
be on the podium bad.”
Valley View’s Kayley Calhoun placed seventh in the two mile with a
time of 12:23.
In the boy’s 3200-meter Gonzo Dominguez of Valley View ran a personal
best time of 10:10 to capture third place and the bronze medal.
Dominguez was wild-carded into the state meet and made the most of it,
making it to the podium.
“Coming into this I didn’t think I would be top three so I just tried
to run a good race and stay on top of it [the pace] and not get
discouraged,” Dominguez said. “It felt great and third place is
amazing.”
Lindsay’s John Price placed eighth in the 3200 with a time of 10:51.
