FOOTBALL: Callisburg survives double overtime against Ponder

PONDER — The Callisburg defense held true on a Ponder two-point conversion attempt in double overtime to give the Wildcats a 43-41 win.

The Wildcats (6-1, 2-1) forced the Eagles into trying for the two points after Clay McKenzie ran in a two-point conversion to go up by eight points in double overtime.

Ponder kept the explosive McKenzie at bay for most the night, limiting him to 117 yards and a touchdown. But it was his final two-point conversion run that would be his biggest play on the night.

Dakota Tinney had 122 yards and three touchdowns on the night for Callisburg. Tinney ran it in for a 1-yard touchdown to give the Wildcats the lead in double overtime.

Wildcat quarterback Rheyce Childress was on top of his game with 143 yards on 7 of 10 passing for two touchdowns. He added 62 yards on the ground.

Childress found Riley Nelson on a 14-yard touchdown pass in the first overtime for the Wildcats.

It was the second consecutive week for the Wildcats to have a wild finish. Last week Callisburg held off a late Boyd rally to win 48-46.

Ponder did its damage through the air as quarterback Reid Sanders connected on 30 of 48 passes for 378 yards and five touchdowns.

Callisburg will host Paradise at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
