COMMERCE — David Moore secured a spot at state with a first place finish in the long jump at the Region II-3A track and field championships in Commerce over the weekend.
The Leopard senior jumped 22 feet, 11.5 inches to take the gold medal at the meet in which the top two finishers advance to the state meet.
The UIL Class 3A State Track and Field Championships will be May 11 on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin. Moore will compete at 8:30 a.m.
Moore’s time was the fourth best of the four regional winners over the weekend, though all faced different variables. Splendora’s Jay Bradford led the pack with a jump of 23 feet, 10 inches.

Josh Manuel, Lilton Moore, Joseph Sanders, Jacob Royal, Eric DeLeon, and Zukari Long also competed at the regional meet, though none advanced to state.
Ariannah Kemp took eighth in the shotput for the Lady Leopard track team. She threw a distance of 34 feet, 6.5 inches.
Raquel Elias was sixth place in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5 minutes, 36.34 seconds.
