BELLS — Quinlan Boles connected on a jumper with 1:07 left to give the Hornets a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
The lead, the first for the Hornets the entire game, was just enough to push Boles past Lindsay 56-54 on Thursday in the Region II-1A area playoffs at Bells High School.
Lindsay had a couple of looks in the final minute with a shot to tie or win the game, but the Knights couldn’t get their shots to fall.
“The loss, and the manner in which we lost is disappointing, but it should not take away from what these young men were able to accomplish this season,” Lindsay coach Lynn Cook said. ”They are the District 13-1A champions. They gained valuable varsity experience and even more valuable playoff experience. This team had no returning varsity starters; and no seniors. Hopefully we can learn from a very tough loss and become better basketball players and a better basketball team for next year.”
Boles (22-7) will play the winner of Trenton and Collinsville in the regional quarterfinals early next week.
Lyndon Cook led the Knights (15-15) with another double-double. This time, Cook poured in 26 points, grabbed 22 rebounds and nearly missed a triple-double with nine blocks.
The Knights took a commanding 20-8 lead in the first quarter and held a 32-24 lead going into halftime. The second half, especially the fourth quarter, Lindsay would get cold.
On the night Lindsay shot 43 percent from the field, but struggled from the line, making only 7 of 20 attempts.
