Gainesville —
Skylar Cagle showed why she is one of the best pitchers in the state Friday as the sophomore pitched a one-hitter to lead the No. 15 ranked Pilot Point Lady Cats to a 13-0 win over Gainesville at Lady Leopard Diamond.
Cagle, who is just a sophomore but has already verbally committed to play softball at Northwestern State University in Louisiana, struck out 10 Lady Leopards without issuing a walk.
Cagle also did damage at the plate going 3 for 4 with 2 singles, a triple and 3 RBIs.
Pilot Point (19-7, 2-0) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Cagle ripped a single and freshman Allison Strittmatter followed with a hard-hit triple to center that scored Alex Poss, who was running for Cagle.
The Cats increased their lead to 7-0 in the top of the second as the visitors sent 12 batters to the plate. The first three reached on walks and Kimber Kuhn then reached on an error that allowed two runs to score. Crystal Reese followed with a single that plated two more. The inning continued with two more GHS errors, a hit by Abby Watson and a walk. Gainesville (6-13, 0-2) finally got out of the inning thanks to a nice catch by shortstop Samantha Calhoun on a line drive.
Gainesville’s only hit came on a second-inning single up the middle by Haley Schumacher, who later stole second on a strike three call for the second out. But Gainesville lost track of how many outs there were. With GHS coaches thinking the strikeout was the third out, Schumacher got off the base. Cagle then fired the ball to the shortstop, Strittmatter, who tagged Schumacher out for the real third out. That would be Gainesville’s only baserunner. From there, Cagle struck out 8 of the next 10 batters she faced.
The Lady Leopards played good defense in the third as Ariannah Kemp caught a popup at third, Taylor Murphy fielded a hard-hit grounder at first and got the out and Shelby Brewer caught a fly ball in left for a 1-2-3 inning.
But Pilot Point added two runs in the fourth as Watson had an RBI sacrifice fly to right that Tiffany Griffith made a nice play to catch. Paige Nortman later followed with an RBI groundout to short to make it 9-0.
The Cats put the game away in the top of the fifth by scoring four more times. Poss walked, Kuhn and Reese followed with back-to-back singles, and Cagle cleared the bases with a triple. Strittmatter then followed with an RBI single and moved to second on an error.
It looked like Pilot Point had added even more runs with one out when Paige Nortman laced a single up the middle to score Strittmatter, but after a long delay, the umpires ruled Strittmatter had left second base early and was called out, keeping the score 13-0.
For Pilot Point, Cagle had 3 hits and 3 RBIs, Strittmatter had 2 hits and 3 RBIs, Reese had 2 hits and 2 RBIs, Watson had a hit and an RBI and Kuhn added a hit.
Sarah Gerken pitched all five innings for Gainesville, allowing 13 runs (9 earned) on 9 hits with a strikeout and 6 walks.
The Lady Leopards will continue district play on the road Tuesday at Argyle.
