GAINESVILLE — More than a month after the completion of Gainesville’s most successful season in nearly a decade, the Leopards have amassed almost every honor possible.
That trend won’t change with the Register’s 2012 All-Cooke County Football team as the Leopards took 10 honors, including two superlatives on the list the best football players out of the area’s seven schools.
Taking the top honor was Gainesville junior running back Adam Berryman, who was selected as the Player of the Year.
Berryman ran for 1,705 yards and 25 touchdowns on the year in helping the Leopards to a 11-1 record and the Class 3A Division I state quarterfinals for the first time since 2005. He ran for at least 150 yards in seven of the final nine games of the season.
Gainesville’s Keith Hall took the Coach of the Year award after turning around the Leopards from 2-8 a year ago to an undefeated district championship.
Callisburg’s Clay McKenzie took the county’s Offensive Most Valuable Player award after an outstanding season that saw him win the District 8-2A Most Valuable Player award and tally more than 2,000 yards of total offense.
McKenzie, the definition of a football athlete, played time at running back, quarterback, wide receiver and even kicked for the Wildcats. He finished the year with 1,719 yards and 24 touchdowns while throwing for another 502 yards.
Muenster’s Cole Walterscheid was named the Defensive Most Valuable Player after a season that saw him collect seven sacks, four blocked kicks and 52 tackles. He was named first-team all-state by the Associated Press Sports Editors and was a first-team All-District 8-1A Division II.
Sacred Heart freshman Kason Reeves was named the county’s Newcomer of the Year. The strong-armed frosh quarterback threw for more than 1,500 yards in helping the Tigers to a 7-4 season.
The All-Cooke County backfield of Gainesville quarterback Denzel Johnson with running backs Landon Boaz (Valley View) and Blake Walker (Lindsay) rushed for nearly 4,000 yards on the year combined with Boaz amassing 1,487 alone.
All-county wide receivers John Paul Hesse (Sacred Heart), David Moore (Gainesville) and Rheyce Childress (Callisburg) offer a versatile mix of talent that can return kicks, catch the ball and make plays with the ball in their hands.
First-team all-district two-way player Avery Fortenberry (Era) highlights the all-county offensive line. Trevor DeBorde (Lindsay), Paul Mouring (Muenster), Jordan Hall (Gainesville) and Logan Smithson (Callisburg) round out the all-county line.
On defense, a pair of Leopards lead the secondary in Jonathan Mendez and Jacob Royal. Hud Harrison (Lindsay) and Trevor Hess (Muenster) also get the nod in the defensive backfield.
The All-Cooke County linebacking crew features three all-state linebackers in Chris White (Gainesville), Gabe Blankenau (Valley View) and Andy Flusche (Muenster). The three plus Lindsay’s Daryl Block combined for more than 450 tackles on the year.
Callisburg’s Jacob Burton highlights the list of all-county defensive linemen. Burton was the District 8-2A Defensive MVP. Lindsay’s Tanner Kuhn and Gainesville’s De’Quan Wilford were also named all-county defensive line.
All-county kicker went to Gainesville Hector Segrero and punter was Valley View’s Hunter French.
