MacPherson named Register sports editor

Gainesville — A former Gainesville resident has returned home to keep sports fans in the know.

Register publisher Jim Perry announced earlier this week that Keith MacPherson has joined the newspaper staff as sports editor.

“I’m pleased to bring in someone with Keith’s experience, and also with the local ties that are so important,” Perry said.

MacPherson, 27, is a 2003 graduate of Gainesville High School and a 2009 graduate of the University of North Texas, having majored in journalism.

He was sports editor for the Conroe Courier for the past three years; prior to that, he served as sports editor at the North Texas Daily.

Local sports is where he specializes, and he said Friday that he understands what it means to people.

“It gathers people together in a common purpose and goal,” MacPherson said. “I think it brings communities together pretty well.”

And now, his current and constant aim is to report the results in a balanced and timely form.

“I grew up playing sports and always loved it,” MacPherson said. “I went to college wanting to be a coach, but I always loved writing, so I got into sportswriting and it kind of took off from there.”

MacPherson said he hopes to be able to maintain excellent coverage for all local sports — involving both boys and girls.

He also said that having spent eight years as a Gainesville resident should prove helpful in accomplishing this.

“I know the tradition and I know the background and history, and that will help me,” he said.
