Gainesville —
Celina’s Jasmine San Miguel showcased her skills on the very field she will be playing on next season.
The future North Central Texas College Lady Lion went 4 for 4 at the plate with four RBIs to help lead No. 12 Celina’s offensive onslaught that overwhelmed the Gainesville Lady Leopards 18-0 Tuesday at NCTC’s Darwin Field.
San Miguel, who recently signed her letter of intent to play college ball at NCTC next season, finished with three singles, a double and a walk.
Also making her pitch for why the Celina Lady Cats cruised to victory was Katelyn Drummond who tossed a five-inning no hitter while accruing 11 strikeouts. Drummond’s bid for a perfect game was lost after she walked Gainesville’s Sarah Gerken in the bottom of the fifth.
Gainesville (5-14, 0-3 district) put only four balls in play off the bats of second baseman Laura Dhane, shortstop Briana Munoz and first baseman Tiffany Murphy.
Platooning the pitching position for Gainesville were Gerken and Madyson Bond. Gerken allowed 11 runs, two unearned, while Bond gave up seven more and four unearned.
Celina (13-6, 3-0) got the ball rolling in the first with two runs thanks to an inside-the-park home run by leadoff hitter Lindsie Knowles and an RBI single by San Miguel.
But the runs began to pour in for the Lady Cats in the second as Drummond plated two runners with a double while San Miguel added two more with a two-run single. Taylor Norris later recorded an RBI after a fielder’s choice scored pinch runner Ashley Garcia. Celina led 8-0 after two innings.
The Lady Cats piled on six more runs in the top half of the third inning thanks to back-to-back RBI walks from San Miguel and Drummond, who also finished with four RBI, three runs scored and two hits. Knowles and Olivia Braddock each added RBI singles late in the inning to give their team a 14-0 lead.
Celina scored two runs in each of the next two innings to mercy rule the Lady Leopards in five innings.
Paige Mongillo plated Drummond and Garcia with a two-run single in the fourth while Drummond scored Shelby Carter on a sacrifice fly and Kassidy Holmes added an RBI double in the fifth.
For Celina, Knowles finished with two hits, two RBI and three runs scored while Braddock added four hits, two runs and an RBI.
Carter finished with two hits and three runs scored while Norris and Mangillo each had a hit and two RBI.
Drummond struck out the first four Lady Leopards she faced before Murphy got a piece of the ball in the second inning, but she was thrown out at first base.
Dhane hit a dribbler back to Drummond who tossed it to first for the out in the fourth. Munoz flied out to the pitcher while Murphy hit a grounder to second base in the fifth.
