Collin County —
The North Central Texas College Lady Lions competed in the regional tournament at Collin County College over the weekend and came away with three losses in three hard fought matches that lasted over five hours each.
First up was the Temple College women who came in with three new players than they had in the fall season and all three played an important role in their win.
The doubles were up first and in line one were Jess Cossari and Elise Burnett-Godfree.
The play was tight right from the start and after being tied 3 all and losing a 12-duece game in the 7th set proved to be too much for the young Lady Lions.
You could see the body language of the Lady Lions’ change after that long and important game and the Temple team played much more aggressive to close out the set.
“To lose two sets 6-3, 6-3 and it take 2 hours, shows the level of play and Temple came away knowing they had their hands full,” NCTC coach Brian Waddell said.
In the line 2 doubles, the team of Mel Telfer and Samantha Haight played another great match with the duo's timing and team work looking very good. They won the first set by the score of 6-3 in an almost perfect played set.
“These two have been playing well all spring even in matches they didn't win,” Waddell said. “They are fun to watch because of all the different things they try during match play and how they adjust from set to set.”
In the second set, NCTC was behind right from the start but kept fighting back to stay in the games but it wasn’t enough to win.
After 45 minutes NCTC lost the set 6-3 which, in turn, set up the third and final set.
Again this set would be just like the first two only longer. The entire doubles match took three hours and the play again was very intense.
The set would go 1-1, 2-2, 3-3 before a couple of bad breaks cost of several points during the next three games and we lost the set 6-3.
“This really put us in a hole since we had to default line three doubles and line six singles in each match due to losing one of our player's from injury about three weeks ago,” Waddell added. “We knew how tough this was going to be but the girls never quit and never complained through-out the tournament.”
In singles play, line one was Cossari, but was not able to come away with a win.
Line two was Burnett-Godfree who played another three-hour, three-set match and came away with a victory. Her scores were: 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
“Elise played well all three sets and really played one of her best sets of the year in the third set of this one,” the NCTC coach said. “She got off to a great start and never looked back. I was very proud of her and her actions throughout the entire match.”
Line three saw Telfer playing against Natalie Hand, a second semester transfer from the No. 1 team in the nation in JUCO tennis (Tyler Junior College). Hand got the upper hand, winning 6-2, 6-1.
Line four singles was Haight, who was ready to play after her three hour doubles match but lost in straight sets by the scores of 6-4, 6-1.
“I think Samantha would of won the match if she could of won the first set,” Waddell said. “She gave it all she could but came away losing the first one 6-4 after another one hour set.
Line five saw Shelby May playing for the first time of the day after not playing doubles and having only 10 minutes to warm-up before match play.
May has very little experience at this level of competition but played a close match, falling just 6-3, 6-2.
The match score ended up 8-1 with the Temple College team winning this one and set up round two with Temple playing New Mexico Military Institute and Collin County CC.
