GAINESVILLE — Cooke County football teams enter the final week of the regular season with a number of district and playoff seeding deciding games looming.
With Lindsay and Gainesville sealing up at least a share of a district championships, the pair will be going for an outright championship with wins this week.
The Leopards (9-0, 3-0) will travel to take on Bridgeport (4-5, 2-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday. A win would give them a district championship, though it will have nothing to do with playoff seeding.
Gainesville will take on Frisco Lone Star in the Region II-3A Division I bi-district playoffs. Lone Star finished third in District 10-3A behind Argyle and Celina.
Lindsay (7-2, 4-0) can claim an outright district title with a win over Blue Ridge (2-7, 1-3) at home on Friday. With wins over Lindsay and Collinsville already, the Knights have already claimed the No. 1 seed and will have a bye the first round of the playoffs.
Perhaps the most confusing of all the area playoff scenarios comes out of District 5-2A Division I, where there is a three-way tie for first place.
Callisburg, Whitesboro and Boyd all have identical 4-1 district records while Pilot Point is hoping one team slips up as it holds a 4-2 league mark with its regular season over.
A win for Callisburg over Bowie on Friday would clinch a playoff spot and a share of the district title. A loss win would cause a three-way tie between Pilot Point, Callisburg and Boyd (or Whitesboro) with each team having beaten each other – Pilot Point over Callisburg, Callisburg over Boyd (or Whitesboro), Boyd (or Whitesboro) over Pilot Point.
That scenario could push Callisburg out of the playoffs all together with the Wildcats being behind all three teams in a point differential situation after their 13-point loss to Pilot Point earlier this season.
Valley View’s end of season scenario is a little bit easier than what Callisburg faces. The Eagles are in the postseason but can move into the second seed with a win over Collinsville.
Valley View will host Collinsville at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
After a furious comeback last week, Sacred Heart can clinch a district title with a win at Ft. Worth Lake Country Christian. The two teams enter the game with identical 5-0 league marks.
