In a tremendous effort Friday night the Callisburg Wildcats fell to Fort Worth All Saints Episcopal 37-24 in Callisburg.
The Wildcats showed vast improvements in all facets of the game including their pocket protection, special teams and defense.
Despite Clay Mackenzie’s two interceptions and six forced fumbles, All Saint was able to pull away in the fourth quarter.
After only amassing two first downs last week, the Wildcats had 14 first downs, 264 yards of total offense and 24 points in Week 1.
They never quit and were always within reach of winning the football game getting within seven points early in the fourth quarter.
Callisburg’s first score came on a 35-yard catch by Alan Eugster capping a 57-yard drive in 10 plays. The Wildcats would not score again until the third quarter on an electric 77-yard touchdown pass by Colten Holder to Cory Harmon midway through the thirrd quarter.
James Jackson proved he can be the ground-and-pound runner for the Wildcats as he finished with 28 yards rushing on six carries and scored a touchdown late in the third quarter.
Callisburg’s (0-2) final scoring play came by the hands of Eugster, who was on the receiving end of a 5-yard pass from Holder midway through the fourth quarter as All Saints held a 31-24 at that point.
However, All Saints next possession yielded a 70-yard touchdown drive in eight plays to put the comeback out of reach for the Wildcats late in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcat defense was busy from the first whistle trying to key on running back Austin White who finished the game with 124 yards on 17 carries along with the game’s leading rusher, quarterback T.J. Milwerd who rushed for 134 yards on only 15 carries helping All Saints to amass 457 rushing yards as a team.
The Wildcats look to continue to improve in Alvarado next Friday night as they take on Class A defending state champion Goldwaithe.
