FOOTBALL: McBath shines at Super Bowl despite loss

NEW ORLEANS — Darcel McBath didn’t win a Super Bowl, but you can’t say he didn’t have an impact.

With the Ravens facing a fourth-and-9 deep in the 49ers’ territory with a little more than three minutes left to play in the first half, Baltimore kicker Justin Tucker lined up for a 31-yard field goal.

Once snapped the Baltimore holder flipped the ball back to Tucker, who then scampered to the sideline where it appeared he would get at least the first down and, perhaps, a touchdown.

In comes McBath.

From the away-side of the defense, the 2004 Gainesville High grad flew to the sideline where he leveled Tucker a yard short of the first-down marker to secure a turnover in downs.

It was McBath’s only tackle in the game though he provided blocks and kick coverage throughout the night on special teams.

Baltimore won 34-31. The trick play McBath sniffed out was the first fake field goal attempt in the history of the Super Bowl.
