GAINESVILLE — One visit to campus was all Denzel Johnson needed.
With signing day less than a week away, Johnson took an official visit to Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.
He left with a scholarship offer, a commitment and his next five years planned out for him.
Johnson made his commitment official on Wednesday when he signed his National Letter of Intent to play for the Horned Frogs.
“I liked (TCU) better than the other schools,” Johnson said. “I liked the people, I liked the coaches, I liked the campus. It’s a place I could see myself at for the next five years.”
Johnson, who was recruited as an athlete, played quarterback and safety for the Leopards as a senior. He totaled 2,175 yards of total offense as a senior - 1,064 rushing, 1,111 passing - in leading Gainesville to a 12-1 record and a berth in the Class 3A Division I state quarterfinals.
Johnson passed up offers to the University of Texas in San Antonio and Washington State to join the Horned Frogs.
“I had a great visit,” Johnson said. “They brought me in and I met all the football players. They treated me like I was a part of the team.”
Johnson was recruited as an athlete by TCU and will try his hand at running back, wide receiver, outside linebacker and safety. The Horned Frogs have had much success in the past converting athletes into star players.
“Where every they need me, I’ll be ready to play,” Johnson said.
The scholarship to play for the Horned Frogs also awards Johnson the chance to play close to home while also playing in the Big 12 - a longtime dream of his.
“I’ve been dreaming of playing in the Big 12 since I was a kid,” Johnson said. “I’m excited to get started.”
