No charges had been filed as of late Monday afternoon in connection with a Halloween night shooting on S. Denton Street, according to Gainesville Police Department spokeswoman Belva McClinton.
McClinton said officers were dispatched to the 700 block of S. Denton Street at about 8:36 p.m. on Oct. 31 for a report of a fight in progress. Officers were told a man was standing on the corner with a gun and a shot had been fired, she said.
No injuries were reported.
A 25-year-old man from Thackerville, Oklahoma, was detained, and a small caliber handgun was found, according to McClinton.
The suspect’s name has yet to be released.
Law enforcement officials said the preliminary investigation determined there was a verbal argument between the suspect and a 21-year-old man from Denton.
The argument escalated into a physical altercation and, at some point, the suspect obtained a weapon from his vehicle and fired one round into the ground, according to McClinton.
Police said the investigation is still ongoing, but they are close to having it complete.
