After her return from active duty in 1946, she remained in the Naval Reserves as an ensign until August of 1950.

Women in the Military National Memorial located in Arlington, Va. recognized her for her military service. She loved the time she spent in the military, especially the travel and the lifelong friends she made.

Viola’s nursing career also included public health nursing and nursing at the old Wichita Falls Clinic before she retired from nursing after working many long hours in the recovery room at what was then known as Bethania Hospital. In that role she mentored many student nurses.

In addition to the Rosary Guild, Viola was a member of the Our Lady Queen of Peace altar society and Catholic Daughters of America. She was active in AARP and local Grief Support Groups. She delivered Meals on Wheels. Until this past year, she also volunteered for the hospital auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Otto in 1962 and three sisters, Johanna Cossey, Lillian Dominguez and Bernice Meurer.

She is survived by her four sons and her daughter. These and their spouses include Norman and Sandy Otto of Dallas; Mike and Jane Otto of Lindsay; Steve and Tracy Otto of Wichita Falls; Philip Otto of Wichita Falls and Frances Otto of Eureka Springs, Ark. She is also survived by her grandchildren, John (and Noreen) Yarwood, Jennifer (and Phil) Rasy. Christina, Mary Michelle, Joe, Emily, and Hayli Otto were all her favorites. Her sister, Helen (and Roland Sigler) of Wichita Falls and brothers, Joe Litteken of Wichita Falls and Arthur (and Shirley) Litteken of Windthorst also survive her along with numerous nieces, nephews, and several special friends whom she mothered along the way.
