DORIS ELIZABETH SIDES AREND
The funeral mass for Doris Arend will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Lindsay. A dinner in Conrad Hall will follow. Services are under the direction of the Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home.
Doris Elizabeth Sides Arend died peacefully at home in the early morning hours on June 20, 2009.
Doris was born Oct, 11, 1926 in Shelby, NC to Suzanna Elizabeth Hart and Arthur Hunter Sides. She grew up in and around Traveler’s Rest, SC. She held a deep love for the Smoky Mountains area her whole life.
Doris graduated from the Medical College of South Carolina at Charleston and received her diploma as a registered nurse. As a nurse, she traveled to Saudi Arabia in 1950 to work for the ARAMCO Oil Company. It was there that she met her future husband, Marion “Richard” Arend. Doris and Richard married Aug. 8, 1955 in Geneva, Switzerland. They returned to Cooke County in February of 1956 to farm and ranch southwest of Lindsay. Doris joined St. Peter’s Catholic Church and remained an active member to the end of her life.
Doris and Richard had two children. Rick was born in 1958 and Barbara was born in 1959. Besides being a devoted wife and mother, Doris returned to nursing in the early 1960’s. During her 40 year career, she was the night supervisor at the Gainesville Memorial Hospital for several years. She retired in 1987 after 15 years as an industrial nurse at the National Supply Company in Gainesville.
Doris had many varied interests. She was an avid reader until the end of her life. She loved watching movies, listening to music, and singing. She also enjoyed an active lifestyle well into her 70’s swimming regularly and traveling the U.S. and Europe with her husband, Richard and her most beloved sister, Thelma.
The greatest joy in her retirement years was brought by the arrival of her five granddaughters. Of all of her roles, Grandma was the one she most cherished. The countless hours spent reading stories, singing songs, and playing games will live on in the memories of her granddaughters forever.
We are grateful for her life and we are honored and filled with her love. She will be missed, but she will live on in our hearts forever.
Doris is survived by her son, Richard Arend of Gainesville and daughter, Barbara Arend of Bedford. She leaves behind her five granddaughters, Sarah and Amanda Arend of Gainesville and Shelby, Emily, and Molly Beyer of Bedford.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion “Richard” Arend; her sisters, Clara Reynolds and Thelma Parker and her brothers, Arthur Sides, Jr. and Neal Sides.
Pallbearers will be Nick Arend, Doug Arend, Matt Yosten, Ray Hellinger, Tom Perrone, and Charles Boles. Honorary pallbearers will be Raymond Butts and Robert Hellinger.
A rosary, with a visitation to follow, will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at the Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home.
