ROBERT ELMORE ALSUP

Former Gainesville resident Robert “Bob” Alsup, 83, passed away in his bed early Thursday morning, Jan. 24, 2013.

Robert was born June 2, 1929, in Grandview to Lloyd and Jewel Alsup.

Lloyd worked on the railroad, as did his father before him.  At 17, just out of high school, Robert also started working for the Santa Fe Railroad and retired from there after 43 years of service. Robert did take a four-year leave from the railroad to serve in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.  When he returned to work, he served for five years in the United States Air Force Reserves. The Alsup family resided in Gainesville for approximately 20 years, from 1972 until 1992.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Betty Evelyn Alsup; and by his sister, Rita Fey Woodard of San Antonio. He is survived by his two sons, both graduates of Gainesville High School, and their families: Robert Scott and wife Camille and their two children of Euless, and Olan “Bubba” Alsup and his wife Stephanie and their three children in Missoula, Mont.

Services will be held at a later date this summer, where he will be buried in Weatherford.

PHILLIP D. “CHANCE” CLINKENBEARD

After a lengthy battle with lung cancer, Phillip D. “Chance” Clinkenbeard, 66, of Gainesville, died and passed into peaceful rest.

He was born in Lawton, Okla., to M.A. and Eva W. Clinkenbeard.

He was reared in Gainesville, graduating from high school before entering the United States Army. Phil served in Vietnam as a Green Beret and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal.

Survivors are his mother, Eva Clinkenbeard of Gainesville; a brother, Michael Clinkenbeard of Gainesville; a sister, Susan Smith and husband Purcell  of Plano; an aunt, Carolyn Jones and husband Robert of Flectcher, Okla.; many cousins; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his father, M.A. Clinkenbeard; and a younger brother, Stephen.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at Fairview Cemetery in Gainesville.

Services are under the direction of Meador-Clement-Keel Funeral Home in Gainesville.

No formal visitation is planned.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718.

ROY WADE HACKNEY, JR.

WHITESBORO — Roy Wade Hackney, Jr., age 83, of Whitesboro, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital-WNJ in Sherman.

Arrangements are under the direction of Waldo Funeral Home in Sherman.

He was born on April 22, 1929, the son of Roy Wade Hackney Sr. and Carrie Inez Searcy Hackney.

Roy was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Gainesville.

Roy is survived by Frances; two daughters, Elizabeth Hamilton and husband Jerry of Round Rock and Cathy Keeler and husband Ken of Gainesville; and one son, Robert Hackney and wife Penny of Honolulu, Hawaii. He is also survived by Frances’s children, Brenda Quick and husband Randy and Joe Bell and Gary Bell, all of Whitesboro, and Peggy Goldston and husband Tracy of Dorchester; grandchildren, Scott Keeler and wife Joanne of Krum, Matt Keeler and wife Karis of Krum, Adam Hackney of Tyler, Catalina Hackney of Orlando, Fla., Lisa Bordan and husband Kurt of Friona, and Alex Hamilton and wife Cyndi of Brenham; and five great-grandchildren, Kyle and Kinsler Keeler, Lexie and Eli Hamilton and Jacen Bordan.

Roy is also survived by his beloved pets, Pepper, Abby and Sugar.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lela Elizabeth Fort Hackney; two brothers; and four sisters.

DON RAY FINCH

Funeral services for Don Ray Finch, 68, of Gainesville, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, at First Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Gainesville with the Rev. Preston Brown officiating.   

Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Gainesville under the direction of Meador-Clement-Keel Funeral Home.

Mr. Finch died Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, in Gainesville.

He was born Jan. 4, 1945, in Gainesville.

Survivors include children, Willistine Hardin of Marlin, Robert Lee Hardin of Wichita Falls and Alfred Ray Hardin of Gainesville; and siblings, Josephine Finch of Gainesville, George Finch, Jr. of Marietta, Okla., and David Lee Finch of Brookline, Mass.

Visitation is set for 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at the funeral  home.

ELBERT IGNATIUS LIND

SAINT JO — Funeral services for Elbert Ignatius Lind, 92, of Saint Jo, are set for 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Muenster with the Rev. Ken Robinson officiating.

Burial will follow in Garden of Memories in Tampa, Fla., under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home in Muenster.

Mr. Lind died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, in Muenster.

He was born Oct. 2, 1920, in Belize, Central America.

Survivors include daughter, Jennifer Shiffer; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A Rosary/vigil is set for 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Sacred Heart Trust Fund or the Knights of Columbus.





JOHN D. WEST

Funeral services for John D. West, 88, of Gainesville are set 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at the Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hubert Wright officiating.  

Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery.

Mr. West died Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, in Denton.

He was born on Oct. 10, 1924, in Bulcher.

Survivors include his wife, Louise West of Gainesville; children, Franklin West of Gainesville, Jim West of Era, Kelly West of Valley View; brother, Ray West; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
