VALLEY VIEW — Funeral services for Voncille Martin, 76, of Valley View, are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 31, 2014 at First Baptist Church – Valley View with Glen Kersey officiating.
Interment will follow at Valley View Cemetery. The family will receive friends at The Rock following the committal service. Services are under the direction of Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home.
Mrs. Martin passed away January 28, 2014 in Denton.
Voncille was born October 28, 1937 in Cooke County to Bedford and Frankie Vestal. She entered into marriage with Thurman Martin on June 24, 1956 in Valley View. Mrs. Martin was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Valley View. She enjoyed traveling, seeing all the beauties of the United States by bus and train. She loved canning and cooking for her family. A great feast was prepared every holiday when she would host her family. Mrs. Martin is remembered by many as a substitute teacher at Valley View and Era schools. Most of all, she loved being on the farm, being a proud farmer’s wife, and caring for her family.
Survivors include daughter, Denise Pearse and husband, Ken of Valley View; son, Jack Martin and wife, Julie of Era; grandchildren, Madison and Kendall Pearse; brother, Bedford Vestal and wife, Carolyn of Houston; best friend, Jane Alexander of Valley View and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her parents; husband and granddaughter, Kendra Pearse.
Serving as pallbearers are Madison Pearse, Ward Vestal, Dwayne Harris, Johnny Brown, Mitchell Hayes, Larry Tipps, Taylor Vestal, and Kenny Blanton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association or First Baptist Church of Valley View.

HAL DEAN BYRD
WHITESBORO — Memorial services for Hal Dean Byrd, 79, of Whitesboro are set for 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014 at North Union Street Church of Christ in Whitesboro under the direction of Meador Funeral Home in Whitesboro.
Visitation is set for 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2014 at 300 E. Main St. in Whitesboro.
Mr. Byrd died Jan. 24, 2014.
He was born Nov. 25, 1934 in Sweetwater.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; children, Greg Byrd and Julie Neil; brother, Jack Byrd; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial services for Leo Walters, 61, of Saint Jo are set for 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014 at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel in Saint Jo with Steve Chism officiating under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home in Saint Jo.
No visitation is planned.
Mr. Walters died Jan. 27, 2014 in Bowie.
He was born June 18, 1952 in Milwaukee, Wis.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Walters of Saint Jo; son, Mike Walters and sister, Jacquelyn Gardner.

HELEN G. PURCELL
January 28, 1923 – January 18, 2014
Helen Gertrude Purcell was born in Kingsville, Ohio on January 28, 1923 to Peter J. and Lillian Diemer.
Helen passed into eternal rest on January 18, 2014 after suffering several years with heart and lung problems, and most recently complications from an infection.
Helen was the third oldest of seven children, with all of her siblings preceding her in death - Alice, Mary, Ray, Chuck, Catherine and most recently, brother Ralph, who passed away last year.
She graduated from Ashtabula High School and enlisted in the Marine Corps during WWII (1944-1946), and was stationed at El Toro Marine Base and Coronado Island in San Diego.
Helen married the love of her life, Maxwell L. (M.L.) Purcell in 1947. They lived and worked in Los Angeles for several years, and moved to Downey, CA in 1953. In 1955 their only child, daughter Diane was born. In 1963 they settled in Garden Grove, CA.
Mom was a loyal, dedicated employee of CalComp, working for many management executives over 28 years and subsequently the company president, and retiring in 1978.
After M.L.’s death in 1994, Helen moved to Anaheim Hills in 2001 to be near her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. In 2009 she moved to Meridian Assisted Living in Anaheim Hills, and in May 2012, due to increasing health issues, moved to Best Elderly Care, Board and Care Home in Orange.
Helen leaves behind her loving family, daughter, Diane and son-in-law, Rod Tippets; three grandchildren, - Ryan (DeAnna), Randy (Bree) and Rebekah (Brooke); seven great-grandchildren, (Marilyn, Riley, Maxwell, Mykayla, Avery, Porter & Finley), and the loving extended families of the Tippets’, Strasheim’s, Bohnet/Kozlik Family; sister-in-law, Pat Diemer of Kingsville, Ohio; Aunt, Martha Strong of Ashtabula, Ohio; many nieces and nephews of the Diemer, Livingston and Olson families in Ohio, Kentucky and Florida; nephew, Bruce Diemer of Chino, CA; Beverly Yeager of Denton, Texas and Bob Hurley of Gilbert, Arizona.
Graveside services with military honors for Helen are scheduled for 12:00 noon on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Fairview Cemetery, Gainesville, TX, where she will be laid to rest next to M.L.
The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home prior to the service.
A funeral service was held at San Antonio de Padua Catholic Church in Anaheim Hills on January 25, 2014.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association, or to the Macular Degeneration Research Foundation.

JASON MICHAEL PIERCE
Jason Michael Pierce, 40, of Wylie, passed away Monday. January 27, 2014.
He was born to Michael and Linda Pierce, Oct. 3, 1973, in Gainesville, TX. Jason graduated from Wylie High School in 1992, and was in the process of pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in criminal justice at UTD.
Jason was a police officer for 20 years working for the City of Richardson and then Dallas County Community College District where he was Captain. He was an active member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Wylie, Leadership Garland, and the Texas Municipal Police Association. He loved to play golf, hunt, fish, and spend time with his family.
Jason is survived by his three children, Garrett, Colton, and Caitlyn, his brother Matt, sister-in-law Sarah, and nephews Luke, James, and Michael.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made out to Texas Police Officers Memorial Foundation, or other law enforcement. The Foundation website is www.pomf.org.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014 at the Charles W. Smith and Sons Funeral Home in Sachse. Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Wylie.
Graveside services for Phyllis Blackmon, 65, of Lake Kiowa, are set for 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014 at Sunset Cemetery.

Mrs. Blackmon died January 29, 2014 in Lake Kiowa.
