M. VIRGINIA (GINGER) BALLINGER

January 18, 1933 – January 18, 2013

OKLAHOMA CITY — Mary Virginia Ballinger, 80, a longtime resident of Oklahoma City, passed away on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, after a brief illness.  

Virginia (Ginger) was born in Wink on Jan. 18, 1933, to Douglas C. Corley and Dorothy M. (Johnson) Corley.  

She was given the perfect birthday gift of seeing her Lord and Savior face to face on her 80th birthday.  She graduated from high school in Nocona in 1951 and married James (Sam) Ballinger on March 7, 1953.  They enjoyed 52 years together before Sam passed away in November 2005.

Virginia held many jobs throughout her life including being a soda clerk in a drug store, a telephone operator, a bank teller, a supervisor with United Cerebral Palsy of Oklahoma City and then retiring from Halliburton Services as a secretary at the field office in Oklahoma City.

Her passion and work for the past 19 years had been visiting with her therapy dogs JJ and Molly, and most recently Ace and Amber, brightening the lives of people in hospitals, nursing homes, the Salvation Army Center, the Center for Battered Women, and in children’s homes around Oklahoma. Virginia enjoyed training and certifying other people’s dogs for Therapy Dogs International.  She was known around the state as a dog obedience trainer, a dog rescuer, and for her help in fostering and adopting out dogs.  She enjoyed her work in senior centers around Oklahoma City as she trained senior adults how to work with and train their own dogs.

Ginger was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Sam.  

She was a devoted mother and inspiration to her surviving family and friends.  

She is survived by her children, James (Rick) Ballinger and his wife Linda of Callisburg; Bill Ballinger and his wife Ellen of Oklahoma City; and Christi Muno and her husband Terry of Colleyville. She is also survived by nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Ellen Walker and husband Jim of Austin; a brother, Doug Corley and wife Sammie of Lubbock; a sister-in-law, Margaret Harris and husband Tom with son Lee of Oklahoma City; and her beloved therapy dogs, Ace and Amber. She will also be greatly missed by a multitude of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at Sooner Baptist Church in Midwest City, Okla., with cremation and later burial to be held at Nocona Cemetery. The service was officiated by Rev. Alvin Garrison, Rev. Bill Ballinger and Rev. Bill Spain.

YOLANDA MORALES GARCIA

A funeral Mass for Yolanda Morales Garcia, 54, of Gainesville, is set for 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2012, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Victor Cruz officiating.

Burial will follow in New Resthaven Cemetery under the direction of Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home.

A rosary with visitation to follow will be recited at St. Mary's Catholic Church at 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013.

Yolanda was born in Robstown on Oct. 31, 1958, to Leon and Maria Riojas Morales.

She passed away in Gainesville on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013.

She is survived by her husband, Gelasio Garcia of Gainesville; son, Charles Luis Garcia of Gainesville; daughter, Elida Maria Garcia of Gainesville; grandchildren, Nick Garcia, Nicole Garcia, Carlos Garcia Jr., Carleah Garcia, Hunter Dick and Gabriel Archilla; four brothers, and four sisters.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother.

LOIS ESTELLE McDANIEL GILLIAND

CARROLLTON — Funeral services for Lois Estelle McDaniel Gilliland, 99, of Carrollton, formerly of Gainesville, are set for Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at 3 p.m. in the Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Chuck Aaron officating with burial to follow in the Fairview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lois passed away on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, in Carrollton.

Lois was born on Sept. 29, 1913, in Carrollton to William H. and Myrtle Howe McDaniel.

The family moved to Gainesville in 1915. Lois married J.A. Gilliland on Nov. 17, 1933. They operated Gilliland Grocery and Market for more than 40 years. She was a member of the Whaley United Methodist Church in Gainesville.

Lois is survived by a son John Dale Gilliland and his wife Jane of Huntington Beach, Calif.; daughters, Donna Gilliland and Susan Wittwer and husband Fred, of Carrollton; grandson, John Richard Gilliland of Huntington Beach, Calif.; granddaughter and husband Lisa and Thierry Mohn and their sons Ian and Eric of Kingwood; grandson, Keith Maples of Carrollton; sister, Wilma Martin of Marietta, Okla.; and brother, Dr. Wallace H. McDaniel and wife Leah of Spring.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Harold McDaniel; and sister, Margaret Wilson.

LESLIE E. “LON” GOLDSTEIN, JR.

FORT WORTH -- Leslie E. “Lon” Goldstein, Jr. passed into the arms of the Lord on Monday morning, Jan. 28, 2013, during his 94th year.

Funeral services are set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at Altamesa Church of Christ, 4600 Altamesa Blvd. in Fort Worth.

Following the service, he will be laid to rest next to his wife, Gerry, in Shannon Rose Hill Memorial Park.

Bearers of his casket will include Brandt and Kyle Goldstein, David Couch, Bill Bowers, Freddy Jones, Mike Lehmann, Marvin “Butch” McBroom and Grey Mills. Honorary bearers will be Gary Kaseberg, Fred Polser and Robert Spellings.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, consideration of contributions to Altamesa Church of Christ, 4600 Altamesa Blvd., Fort Worth, TX 76133, or a charity of choice, in his memory, is suggested.

Born May 13, 1918, in Austin, Lon was the son of L.E. and Mary Proctor Goldstein. He grew up in Fort Worth and graduated from Polytechnic High School where he was a three-sport letterman. He received his master's in education from Texas Wesleyan College.

Lon signed a major league baseball contract with the Cincinnati Redlegs and played professional baseball for 25 years with various teams across the U.S. On Dec. 21, 1940, he married Geraldine Newsome; they shared 63 wonderful years together before her death in 2003.

Lon served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army. Following his tour of duty, he taught and coached at Carter High School in Fort Worth for 35 years and served as athletic director for the Fort Worth public schools until his retirement in 1985. He was named “Athletic Director of the Year” in 1975 for Texas; the Fort Worth ISD baseball field is named in his honor. Lon was inducted into the Texas Wesleyan Sports Hall of Fame in 1983 and the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995.

“Coach” was much loved and respected by his students, family and friends. He had a positve impact on many lives and a nickname for everyone.

In addition to his son, Dr. Mike Goldstein and his wife Billie of Farmersville, Lon is survived by his daughter, Pat Couch and her husband Jerry of Sunrise, Fla.; grandchildren, Brandt Goldstein and his wife Christi of Waco, Maj. Kyle Goldstein and his wife Carrie of San Antonio, Sherry Corley and her husband Mark of Arlington, and Lisa Lehman and David Couch of Sunrise, Fla.; beloved great-grandchildren, Tiffany and Zach Corley, Nicolette Lehman, Hayley, Jacob, Hunter, Gatlin and Gracyn Goldstein; and niece, Frenny Lehmann and her husband Mike of McKinney. DOUGLAS DEAN “DOUG” HOUTCHENS

Douglas Dean “Doug” Houtchens, age 82, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at his residence at Lake Kiowa, Cooke County, near Gainesville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at Gainesville Bible Church at 601 N. Radio Hill Road, with Pastor Mark Wascom officiating, assisted by Rev. Joe Knox.   

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, in Electra Memorial Park.

Arrangements are under the direction of Dutton Funeral Home of Iowa Park.

Doug was born June 2, 1931, in Harrold, to Howard H. and Hilda (Bilstine) Houtchens.  He married Anna Doris White on Dec. 23, 1950 in Electra.  

He served in the National Guard and was owner and operator of oil production.  Doug lived in Electra for several years before moving in 1970, to Saint Jo and the Gainesville area.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Rebel Houtchens, and a son, Toby Houtchens.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Doris of Lake Kiowa; daughter, Bethanne Houtchens Moore and son, Adam, of Gainesville; son, Christopher Houtchens and wife, Lettie and children, Daniel, Andrea and Alex of Garland; son, Casey Houtchens and wife, Stacy of Saint Jo; a brother, Dewayne Houtchens, of Arlington; a sister, Yedell Abbott of Wichita Falls; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

JOHN “JERRY” SAXTON

CUSTER CITY — Funeral services for John “Jerry” Saxton, 86, of Custer City are set for 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at Meador-Clement-Keel Chapel with visitation one hour prior to the service.  Father Stubbs of St. Paul's Episcopal Church will be officiating.  

Interment will follow in Union Hill Cemetery.  

Mr. Saxton died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, at Baylor Heart Hospital in Plano.

Jerry was born Jan. 19, 1927, in Minneapolis, Minn.  

Mr. Saxton was a retired master chief with the U.S. Navy.  He had served during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars. Following his military retirement, Jerry worked for Worthington Dresser-Rand Industries until retiring.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.  He loved farming and was an avid Ranger baseball fan.

Survivors of John Saxton include his wife, Rochelle Saxton of Custer City; daughter, Robin Saxton of Austin; sons, Roy Dale Saxton of Springtown, Dewey Carpenter of Alexandria, Va., Scott Dungan of Custer City and Casey Dungan of Woodbine; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.  

He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret King; stepfather, Fred Wicks; wife, Audrey Bea Saxton; sons, Chet Saxton and Lance Saxton; and a daughter, Ruth Saxton.

Services are under the direction of Meador-Clement-Keel Funeral Home.

Lavone Washington, 79, departed this life on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013.

She is survived by three daughters, Lavonna, Sheena and Rochelle; four sons, Alander, Johnny, Samuel and Russell; 26 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters; and a host of relatives and friends.

Mr. Barrett died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at Presbyterian Hospital in Denton.

He was born May 10, 1964, in Waco.
