Lindsay students sweep 1A UIL compeitions

Lindsay set the record in 2005 with 274.5 points total — which broke the 2001 record of 188 points.

“I’ve been doing this for a long time now, and I thought I’ve seen it all,” said Craig Hertel, Lindsay’s UIL academic coordinator. “But I walked away from this year flabbergasted!”

He noted Rachel Zimmerer won four awards, Laura Zimmerer and freshman Dillon Hansen placed in three events.

Hertel said there is a tradition to maintain that has been carried on well by this year’s senior class, but he said with Hansen and others he has hopes that future classes will continue to win at future UIL academic events.

Other area schools, such as Muenster, Valley View, Collinsville and Saint Jo, also fielded successful state UIL academic competitors.

Below are the individual results from area students listed by academic event.

Calculator applications — Dillon Hanson of Lindsay took fifth place.

Cross examination debate — Derek Hundt scored first place and Pooja Patel second place, both from Lindsay High School.

Current issues — Sara Anwar of Lindsay won second place.

Computer applications — Jace Walker of Valley View took second place.

Editorial writing — Laura Zimmerer of Lindsay won first.

Headline writing — Laura Zimmerer of Lindsay took second place.

Informative speaking — Jill Bezner of Lindsay took first place, followed by classmate Chelsea Hermes in sixth place.

Lincoln-Douglas debate — Jill Bezner of Lindsay received first place.

Mathematics — Dillon Hanson of Lindsay scored first, with Christina Eckart in sixth place.

Number sense — Dillon Hanson of Lindsay took second place, followed by Nick Bezner of Lindsay in fourth place.

One act play — Rachel Zimmerer was named both “Best Actress” and “Outstanding Performer.” Hayley Skeans was named to the All Star Cast. John Nystrom was given an honorable mention.

Persuasive speaking — Cletus Fuhrmann of Muenster won fifth place.

Poetry interpretation — Haley Skeans of Lindsay took first place, with Maria Schoppa of Saint Jo in fifth place.

Prose interpretation — Rachel Zimmerer of Lindsay took first place, and Natalie McCrary, also of Lindsay, won fifth place.

Spelling and vocabulary — Twin sisters Rachel Zimmerer and Laura Zimmerer of Lindsay won third and fourth place, respectively.

Team results are as follows.

Cross examination debate — Lindsay won second place with 16 points.

Journalism — Lindsay took first place with 10 points.

Mathematics — Lindsay won second place with five points.

Number sense — Lindsay took the top spot with 10 points.

One act play — Lindsay won first place with 36 points, and Collinsville took third place with 23 points.

Speech — Lindsay won first place with 10 points.

Spelling and vocabulary — Lindsay took first place with 10 points.
