TEA releases school ratings

Cooke County — The Texas Education Agency’s release of state accountability ratings Friday indicated two Cooke County school districts with an “exemplary” status.

Muenster ISD and Lindsay ISD abide in the top slots through testing scores of 90 percent or higher in Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) subgroups. This includes writing, social studies, math, science and English language arts. Other rating factors include school attendance.

“We’re very pleased with that,” said Muenster ISD Superintendent Clay Richerson, whose elementary and high schools were rated by the TEA. “That shows the hard work and dedication of our students and teachers. It goes along with the expectations of this school and this community.”

Gainesville ISD earned an overall “academically acceptable” status. This is third place in a rank of four — “exemplary,” “recognized,” “academically acceptable” and “unacceptable.” Among Cooke County campuses, the Valley View, Callisburg and Era districts were “recognized” while the Walnut Bend and Sivells Bend districts were deemed “academically acceptable.” Only representatives of Muenster, Era and Gainesville districts were reachable for comment.

Notable in Gainesville ISD’s list of TEA-rated campuses is Gainesville High School, which was deemed “unacceptable” in its testing scores.

Superintendent Jeff Brasher released a statement Friday admitting disappointment in the high school rating. He also wrote steps to improvement are underway.

“We at Gainesville ISD and Gainesville High School are committed to improving our academic ratings in all areas,” Brasher wrote. “The administrators and I have begun working and preparing for a better academic future for all Gainesville ISD students. The administrators have spent endless hours reviewing our performance data, and are in the process of implementing strategies that will promote higher academic standards and expectations for all GISD students.”

Era ISD Superintendent Jeremy Thompson, citing his district’s “recognized” rating, said in a statement Friday it missed “exemplary” status by a narrow margin. Only a few students had disqualifying scores in math and science, he wrote.

“While the TEA accountability rating labels are certainly one measure of the success of a district and its students, I believe that they only give a part of the real story of a school district,” Thompson wrote. “It is ultimately our main goal as a district to prepare kids to be good citizens and well-prepared for life after high school in whatever they endeavor to do. Considering our TEA ratings in the context of the many other facets of Era ISD, I'm extremely proud of our school district and our board of trustees, staff and students.”

An Associated Press story released Friday afternoon said Texas school ratings have “plummeted” under the TEA’s more rigorous recent standards. The number of “unacceptable” schools rose from 104 to 569, the story said, and “exemplary schools” dropped from 2,637 to 1,224. The AP story added that the TEA had recently eliminated a calculation called the “Texas Performance Measure,” which critics said allowed schools to count failing students as passing.
