Gainesville —
What is it like being the new principal at the Gainesville Middle School?
It is very exciting. As an assistant principal at Gainesville High School the last couple of years I heard a lot of positive things about the students and teachers at Gainesville Middle School. Now I get to experience and be a part of everything that is happening here. We have great kids and a faculty/staff that take the extra steps to ensure their success.
What are the two biggest challenges for the students at Gainesville Middle School this year?
I believe one of the biggest challenges for our students is meeting the expectations that the school sets forth. The teachers of Gainesville Middle School set the bar high. We are preparing our students for high school and future success. Along with setting the bar high our teachers provide the support each student need to reach those expectations.
Another challenge for our students is to maintain balance. Besides being academically successful we want our students to be involved in other areas. Whether it is band, choir, athletics or any of the school sponsored clubs we believe that extracurricular involvement is critical to the development of our students.
What is your background in education and what brought you to move into education administration?
After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, I was a Spanish teacher for 12 years. During my last couple years of teaching, Gene Suttle was the principal of the school where I taught. I was also an administrative intern at the school at that time. When he took the job at Gainesville High School I asked if I could come along. I’ve always liked Gainesville and thought it would be a great opportunity to work here.
What is one of your personal philosophies or mission statement?
I believe that every student can learn. Some students need different approaches than others but all can be successful. It is our job as educators to see how we can meet each of our students needs.
