On Thursday, the Gold-Burg Bears hosted the Saint Jo Panthers for the final regular season game of the year. The Panthers won 52-0 for a perfect 9-0 overall record and an unblemished district record at 3-0.
The Panthers received the opening kick and after a few plays came away with a touchdown thanks to an Aaron Sapp 22-yard run. The kick by Luke Chaffin was good to make it 8-0 Saint Jo.
The Bears mishandled the following kick-off allowing the Panthers to regain possession, and again after a few plays scored. This time it was Brady Chadick scoring from 39 yards out to give his team a 14-0 lead after a missed PAT.
After recovering the ball on the kick-off again, the Panthers put in their second string players.
This caused the offense to sputter and allowed the Bears to pick off a pass from Nathan Cannon. the Panthers stopped the bears on three plays and again put in the younger players.
The rest of the game was more of the same Panthers football they have played all year, helping give the Panthers an undefeated season for the first time since 1965.
The Panthers held the Bears to a total of 16 yards offense and only two first downs.
The Panthers caused the Bears to fumble the ball six times with the Panthers coming up with three of them while picking off one pass.
Chadick led the Panthers’ rushers with three carries for 74 yards and two TDs, Shaden Clark led in passing as he went 2-of-4 for 47 yards and a touchdown.William Phillips led all receivers with three catches for 55 yards and two touchdowns. Also adding two scores was Sapp with one coming on a fumble recovery.
The Panthers play Avalon next Thursday night at Ponder in Division I bi-district play. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
