With a home playoff game at stake in two weeks, the Sacred Heart Tigers “played their best game of the year”, according to Coach Schilling, to insure they would not have to travel. The Tigers played a very physical game in route to a 50-22 defeat of the Lubbock Christian Eagles.
On their first possession, Lubbock Christian was facing a fourth and two from their own 33 when the punter rolled out to punt rugby style when he decided to tuck and run. Matt Hesse sniffed out the fake and set the tone for a very physical Sacred Heart defensive effort as he met the punter and put a huge hit on him for one of his game high 16 tackles to keep Lubbock one yard short of a first down. Two plays later, Hesse faked to Josh Biffle up the middle, pulled it and ran 33 yards for the first score of the game. Josh Biffle ran in the two point conversion. Lubbock would not be denied as quarterback Michael Sanders kept around end and ran 44 yards for a score. Their two-point conversion failed for an 8-6 Sacred Heart lead.
On Sacred Heart’s next possession, the Tigers earned five first downs in moving from their own 40 yard line to the end zone when Hesse found Bob Bartush for a 16-yard touchdown pass. The Same combination of Hesse to Bartush was good for two points and a 16-6 Tiger lead.
Michael Davis picked off a Lubbock pass after a failed onside kick by the Tigers. Davis then broke two tackles on a nifty run down to the Lubbock 2-yard line. From there Hesse crossed the goal line for a 22-6 Tiger lead. Josh Biffle, the leading Tiger ground gainer with 140 yards, went over from the two yard line for the next Tiger score to make it 30-6.
The very next series for Lubbock ended when Josh Biffle intercepted one of his two passes and the teams 5 total interceptions. Soon thereafter, Hesse found Bob Bartush for a 17 yard touchdown pass to up the score to 38-6.
Justin Brown had a huge open-field tackle on the quick Lubbock quarterback to save a touchdown. Lubbock punted the ball and Sacred Heart set up shop on their own 30 yard line. Freshman Keith Metzler ran 39 yards to the Lubbock 31 yard line. A few plays later, Michael Davis hauled in a 16 yard touchdown pass. The run failed for a 44-6 Sacred Heart halftime lead.
On the first series of the third quarter, Hesse found paydirt from 45 yards out on a nice run. The run failed for a 50-6 score. Bob Bartush intercepted a pass on the next possession as it appeared the Lubbock receiver hauled in a touchdown pass when it glanced off of him and into the arms of Bartush. Lubbock Christian scored twice in the fourth quarter when the game was out of reach. The Tigers have their bye week next week in preparation for the playoffs.
