Baillio, York take home medals

By MARVIN HOGAN, Sports Editor

AUSTIN — What could have been the “Lindsay invitational” turned into the “Bonnie Richardson track and field meet.”

On a muggy Saturday afternoon, at The University of Texas at Austin’s Mike Myers Track Stadium, Richardson single handily won the Girls Class A meet. Richardson, from Rochelle, scored 42 points to take the team title.

According to University Interscholastic League officials, this occurrence has happened one other time in UIL history.

Meridian High School star, and future Baylor and Pittsburgh Steeler football player, Frank Pollard did it in the 1970s.

Lindsay’s high hopes to finish in the top 5 of the final Class A girls standings didn’t work out that way.

Though it was not because of lack of trying or character, the Lady Knights finished in a tie for 10th when the final standings were totaled.

Lindsay scored 18 points to tie the Lady Cyclones of Memphis for 10th.

The Lady Knights’ Kelsey Hermes (7th, 12:06.61) and Katelyn Brewer (8th, 13:14.88) finished out of the points in the 3200-meter run.

Teammate Chelsea Hermes, in a photo finish, (2nd, 2:21.29) picked up 8 points in the 800-meter run. Rose Hermes took third in the 800 with a time of 2:21.29

Stephanie Neu battled through the entire race (7th, 26.62), but failed to score any points in the 200-meter dash.

Kelsey Hermes (5th, 5:32.22) collected 2 points for her finish in the 1600-meter run.

Katelyn Brewer finished 7th in the 1600 with a time of 5:57.92

In the last event of the day, the Lady Knights 1600-meter relay team of Rose Hermes, Chelsea Hermes, Bethani Eberhart and Neu turned in a 4:11.85 to claim 6th place in the 1600-meter relay.

The quartet ran hard but couldn’t catch 5th place Vega (4:08.85).

In other Class A events, Era freshman Jacy Steelman finished 8th in the triple jump with a leap of 32-08.

Lindsay’s Ross Jones took fifth in the high jump with a leap of 6-2.

Whitesboro’s Hayden Baillio took first in both the discus (184-01) and the shot put (66-0).

Baillio’s teammate, Matt Burton took 5th in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.81.

Gainesville’s Amy Franklin finished 8th in the girls Class 3A shot put with a toss of 38-0.

Valley View’s Josh York took 2nd and 7th, respectively, in the 800-meter run and the 1600-meter run.

York ran a 2:00.33 in the 800 and a 4:54.27 in the 1600.
