Tech exes host Raider Cup golf tourney

MUENSTER — Fans of the University of Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Baylor don’t usually show their support for Texas Tech University, but they did on Monday.

Golfers from around the state represented their favorite college or university while helping to raise money for the Cooke County chapter of the Texas Tech Alumni Association at the annual Raider Cup golf tournament held at Turtle Hill Golf Course in Muenster.

The tournament raised almost $9,000 for the chapter’s scholarship fund, bringing the endowment to around $57,000, according to chapter member Charles Draper. The goal is to get the endowment to $100,000, according to Draper. The alumni association provides scholarships annually to Cooke County students who plan to attend Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

The tournament was the brainchild of Tech-ex Doug Lillard and was coordinated by Lillard and John Morris. Golfers form teams, representing their favorite school. In addition to all of the Big 12 Conference schools, schools like Southern Methodist University, the University of North Texas, Stephen F. Austin, Texas A&M-Commerce and North Central Texas College were represented.

Current Red Raiders assistant football coach Charlie Sadler was on hand to play, along with several former Red Raiders including All-American Dave Parks. Former Harlem Globetrotters great Marcus Haynes was also there to take part in the fellowship and enjoy a catfish dinner. The meal was cooked by Herkie Biffle and donated by Impact, Peak, Tejas and Select Energy.

The tournament was won for a second-straight year by a team representing Oklahoma State. The winning team of Kevin Gann, Zach Claxton, Thomas Hughes and David Hughes had a gross score of 129.

In the net score division, the team of Marc Reiter, Brad Worth, Phil Neely and Kevin Palma won with a score of 115. The team had players representing both the University of Texas and Texas A&M.

Tournament winners will have their names engraved on the Raider Cup trophy which will be displayed at businesses around Cooke County. The tournament is in it’s fifth year.
