Aubrey passes to win over Valley View

AUBREY — The Aubrey Chaparrals continued to look unstoppable as the Valley View Eagles became their latest victim in a 51-7 victory Friday night in Aubrey.

Passing the ball more than they had all season, the Chaparrals (9-0 overall, 4-0 district) scored on each of their first five possessions, and sent their seniors home with a win in their final regular season home appearance.

“We needed to throw the ball some, and we felt like we could have all year,” said Aubrey head coach G.A. Moore. “We’re trying not to depend on one phase of the game. I think if you are going to win big you have to run and throw the ball well.”

Never satisfied, coach Moore believes the Chaparrals could have played better.

“We played pretty good in the first half,” Moore said. “I don’t know what happened in the second half. We didn’t have that killer attitude, but we played well enough, I guess.”

Aubrey didn’t need their offense to score all of their points.

Leading 14-0 early in the second quarter, Aubrey was set to receive a punt to get the ball back. Valley View punter Scott Willis hit a solid directional kick to the 2-yard line and Moore yelled at returner Jordan Starling to let it go.

Ignoring his coach’s advice, Starling fielded the kick. With effective special teams blocking and the roar of the home crowd, Starling returned the kick 98 yards to the house.

“That’s Jordan. He doesn’t listen to me anyway,” Moore said with a chuckle. “When he grabbed that thing and took off I thought ‘lord have mercy.’”

Valley View’s only score came in the third quarter with the Eagles already down 35-0. Cameron Vesperman caught a 10-yard TD pass from Willis and Brandon Tipps added the PAT kick.

In the fourth quarter, the Chaparrals tackled Willis in the end zone for a safety, giving the game its final score.

The touchdown the Chaparrals surrendered to the Eagles is only the fourth they have given up all season. Aubrey has won by a collective 392-28 during their first nine games.

Valley View finished with just 86 yards of offense. Dustin Tomlinson was the leading rusher with 24 yards on 11 carries. Willis was 9 of 21 passing for 61 yards. A.J. Kassen caught three passes for 25 yards.

The Eagles have now lost three straight conference games, dropping their record to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in District 10-2A. They will look to get back in the win column at home Friday when the Pottsboro Cardinals invade.

Aubrey’s win coupled with Pilot Point’s 30-20 victory over Callisburg means the two highly-ranked undefeated teams will meet Friday in Pilot Point to end the regular season.

“I know next week’s game means a lot to the fans,” Moore said. “But when you get right down to it, it doesn’t have anything to do with going to playoffs. I want us to be ready to hit the playoffs and play hard there.”
