Lindsay stays in first with 37-7 win

BLUE RIDGE — In what seemed like a game filled with flags, the Lindsay Knights overtook the Blue Ridge Tigers, 37-7, in a tension-filled contest.

The Knights came out in the first quarter with two unanswered touchdowns. The first score started with an interception by Ross Jones after a pass intended for Blue Ridge’s Cody Mills. Runs from Ryan Haverkamp and Frankie Cornett put the Knights in good field position for their first points of the night. Dax Fleitman connected with Ross Jones for a 17-yard touchdown pass. The PAT was good by Travis Skinner to put the Knights up 7-0 with 3:14 left in the first quarter.

Quickly after the kickoff, Haverkamp got another interception for the Knights off of an errant pass by Blue Ridge quarterback Jake Price. A false start was called on the Knights to put them back five yards. Junior Robert Arend answered back with a 41-yard touchdown run. The PAT from Skinner would put the Knights up 14-0 with 1:02 left in the first quarter.

Coming out in the second quarter, the game saw its first set of flags. In the first plays of the second quarter, offsides was called on the Knights twice. The extra yardage didn’t do much for the Tigers, as they were forced to punt after just a few plays. A quick three and out for the Knights gave the ball back to Blue Ridge deep in their own territory.

The Knights answered back, forcing another three and out for the Tigers. A run by Cornett and a completion to Jones set the Knights up for their third touchdown of the night. Arend had an 18-yard run for a touchdown, and the PAT by Skinner was good to put the Knights up 21-0 with 3:28 left in the half.

The next set of downs started off with another flag, false start on Blue Ridge. That and a fumbled snap pushed the Tigers back, and forced them to punt, giving the Knights good field position.

A pass to Jones and a facemask penalty on the Tigers set the Knights up for a field goal by Skinner to put them up 24-0 with 19 seconds left in the half.

A personal foul on the Knights after the kickoff with no time left on the clock gave the Tigers one extra play. A run by quarterback Jake Price gave the Tigers a few yards to end the half.

After the kickoff, a quick fumble by the Tigers recovered by Lindsay’s Will Taylor gave the ball right back to the Knights. A completion to Madison Parkhill and a run by Haverkamp set the Knights up for their fourth touchdown of the night. Haverkamp ran it in from 4 yards out and the PAT by Skinner put the Knights up 31-0 with 9:47 left in the third quarter.

Multiple runs by Blue Ridge’s Price, Zach Rainwater and Brennan Smith brought them just yards shy of the goal line at the end of the third quarter.

The ball was given right back to the Knights at the beginning of the fourth after a quick fumble by the Tigers recovered by Lindsay’s Clay Mueller. Two flags for personal fouls, one on each team, offset each other. Another flag for roughing the passer against the Tigers was thrown, giving the Knights the field position for their next points of the night. Senior Josh Mueller had a touchdown run for 35 yards. The PAT was no good after a fumbled snap and a failed run, making the score 37-0 with 8:20 left in the game.

As tensions heated, four more personal foul flags were thrown, two on the Knights and two on the Tigers. A set of runs by Price set the Tigers up for their only points of the night. A 19-yard pass to Beau Blacketer and a PAT by Jace Koonce finished out the scoring for the night, making the final 37-7 Lindsay.
