GHS's Carranza qualifies for cross country regionals

CELINA — Gainesville sophomore Giovanni Carranza qualified for the Class A Region II cross country meet thanks to a sixth-place finish at the District 9-3A meet held Wednesday in Celina.
The top three teams and top ten finishers qualify for the regional meet. Argyle won the varsity boys division with 21 points, while Sanger was second with 59 and Prosper was third with 78. Gainesville came in fourth with 103, followed by Frisco Heritage with 112, Whitesboro with 135 and Byron Nelson with 184.
Jake Roberts of Argyle was the varsity boys medalist with a time of 16:33.55. Carranza’s sixth-place time was 17:30.81.
Carranza will run at the regional meet Nov. 7 at Vandergriff Park in Arlington.
Also for Gainesville, Everado Puente was 15th (18:48), Noel Puente was 19th (18:57), Justin Ramirez was 29th (19:58), Daniel Galicia was 38th (21:39), Chris Govea was 39th (22:09) and Angel Carranza was 40th (22:15).
For Whitesboro, Matt Hobbs was 13th (18:27), Oscar Gonzales was 17th (18:52), Ryan Harbin was 31st (20:05), Troy Willis was 37th (20:52), C.J. McKinzie was 43rd (23:57) and Joe Shepherd was 47th (26:28).
For the varsity girls, Argyle was first with 27 points, Sanger was second with 41 and Celina was third with 74. All three teams will move on to regionals. Prosper was fourth with 120 points, Frisco Heritage was fifth with 130 and Gainesville was sixth with 137.
Argyle Colbea Harris dominated the varsity girls race, winning with a time of 12:16.79, almost one minute faster than the second-place time.
Gainesville freshman Sharon Kirk finished 19th with a time of 14:31. Also for the Lady Leopards, Jordan Garcia was 23rd (14:44), Amanda Eddowes was 26th (15:05), Ashley Molina was 31st (15:33), Clara Mendez was 39th (16:59), Shelly Reynolds was 41st (18:47) and Irma Oliva was 42nd (18:50).
For Whitesboro, Jade Gill was 38th (16:52).
In the junior varsity boys division, Gainesville finished fifth behind Sanger, Argyle, Prosper and Celina.
Mitchell Case was 20th (22:17), Rey Lizalde was 27th (23:58), Ricardo Mendez was 35th (26:04), Jonathan Vasquez was 36th (29:15) and Dalton Knighten was 37th (29:41).
