Holiday Classic Monday girls action

Callisburg, Howe, Sacred Heart and Lindsay all came up with pool play wins during the first day of the North Central Texas College Holiday Classic Monday at Lions Fieldhouse on the NCTC campus.

Pool play will continue during the early part of today, with bracket play beginning at 3 p.m. The tournament continues through Wednesday.

Here is a recap of Monday’s action.



Callisburg 60

Era 36

Lauren Romines was a perfect 12 for 12 from the free throw line and finished with 18 points as the Callisburg Lady Cats opened play at the NCTC Holiday Classic with a 60-36 win over the Era Lady Hornets early Monday morning.

For the game, Callisburg made 23 of 34 free throw attempts, while Era was 12 of 23 from the foul line. The Lady Cats led 16-7 after the first quarter and 27-21 at halftime. Era got within 27-24 early in the third period, but Callisburg closed the quarter on an 18-3 run.

In addition to Romines’ 18 points, Emily Westbrook added 11, Sara Richardson had 8, Morgan Reed and Britni Shafer each scored 6, Tara Wescoat had 4, Taylor Curtright added 3, and Morgan McKenzie and Miranda Byrom each had 2.

For Era, Cortney Seay and Cheree Kiser each had 12 points, Shae Knabe added 5, Hannah Weber had 3, and Julia Rust and Casey Hudson each scored 2.



Howe 85

Gainesville 31

Five players scored in double figures for Howe as the Lady Bulldogs rolled to an 85-31 win over the Gainesville Lady Leopards at the NCTC Holiday Classic Monday.

Howe led 19-13 after the first quarter, but outscored the Lady Leopards 25-11 in the second quarter to build a cushion. The Bulldogs extended the lead in the second half, outscoring Gainesville 41-8.

Jordan England scored 21 points for Howe, all of those points coming in the first three quarters. Jenna Burchfield added 14 points, Jessica Luangaphay and Ashley Davis each scored 13 and Meredith Thomas added 12. Also for Howe, Katie Pelzel scored 7, Gretchen Debner had 4 and Morgan England added 1.

For Gainesville, Rachael Mack poured in 11 points, Amy Franklin scored 6, Megan Gonzales and Jalisa Moore each had 5, and Alexandra Cooney and Sky Lynn-Ferch both had 2.



Sacred Heart 51

Callisburg 32

The Sacred Heart Tigerettes used a 14-4 advantage in the second quarter to break open a close game and defeat the Callisburg Lady Cats 51-32 at the Holiday Classic Monday afternoon.

The game was tied 13-13 after one quarter, but that 14-4 run in the second pushed the Tigerettes to a 27-17 halftime lead. Sacred Heart increased their lead to 14 (40-26) going into the fourth.

Samantha Wimmer scored 22 points to lead Sacred Heart, while Kristin LeBrasseur added 11, Rebecka Hesse added 6, Karli Anderle and Sydney Hoedebeck each had 4, and Lisa Miller and Kalyssa Pollard both added 2.

For Callisburg, who was playing their second game of the day, Morgan McKenzie hit three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points. Morgan Reed added 9, Lauren Romines had 5, Sara Richardson scored 3, Miranda Byrom and Britni Shaffer each had 2 and Emily Westbrook added 1.



Lindsay 59

Gainesville 32

All nine Lindsay players got on the scoreboard as the Lady Knights won their first game at the Holiday Classic, downing the Gainesville Lady Leopards 59-32 Monday night.

Lindsay jumped out to a 17-8 lead after the first quarter and increased their advantage to 32-16 at halftime.

Jessica Block led the Lady Knights with 12 points, while Beverly Knabe added 9, Bethani Eberhart had 8, Cammi Neu and Rose Hermes each scored 7, Katie Dieter had 6, Kaylee Murphree and Kristin Martin both chipped in 4 and Elizabeth Martin added 2.

For Gainesville, Amy Franklin led the way with 10 points, Jalisa Moore added 8, Megan Gonzales had 5, and Rachael Mack, Aerial Allred and Sky Lynn-Ferch all scored 3.
