Holiday Classic Monday boys action

The Gainesville State School Tornadoes looked impressive, the Callisburg Wildcats picked up a key win over a ranked team, and Forestburg dialed in from long distance to win on the first day of boys action at the North Central Texas College Holiday Classic Monday.

All of Monday’s games were pool games. Pool play continues today with bracket games scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.

Here is a recap of Monday’s action.



Gainesville State 62

Callisburg 41

The Gainesville State School Tornadoes had three players in double figures in a 62-41 win over the Callisburg Wildcats Monday morning at the NCTC Holiday Classic.

L. Fautner scored 16, B. Manuel added 14 and B. Hardeman had 11 for the Tornadoes.

Ben Fisk hit six 3-pointers and scored 19 points for the Wildcats.

Gainesville State led 7-4 after the first quarter, but outscored the Wildcats 20-10 in the second period to open up a 13-point halftime lead.

Tracey Randle added 8 points for Callisburg, while Quincy Hough scored 6, Bobby Dorman, Oscar Gutierrez and Taylor Dishman each added 2, and Jamey Brinlee and Alex Averill both scored 1.



Howe 60

Gainesville JV 53

Gainesville’s Patrick Westbrook hit a shot with 1 second remaining to send the game to overtime, but Howe outscored the Leopards 9-2 in the extra period to take a 60-53 at the Holiday Classic Monday.

Gainesville JV had a lead after the first, second and third quarters. They were up 34-29 going into the fourth, but Howe’s Kenny Herbert scored 12 points in the quarter as the Bulldogs were able to claw their way back. Herbert added five more points in overtime for Howe.

Herbert finished with 21 points, while Sean Hemperley added 11, Alex Torres scored 9, Scott Vance had 7, Matt Dowlen added 6, Jordan Gray scored 3, Zach Wilks had 2 and Russell Wortham added 1.

For Gainesville, Westbrook led the way with 14 points, eight of which came in the fourth quarter. Dakota Nichols hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 12 points, Jake Neal had 10, Caleb Covington added 7, Cody Welch and Todd Sweeten both scored 4, and Guy Bradley added 2.



Callisburg 57

Sacred Heart 54

Bobby Dorman poured in 17 points, nine in the fourth quarter alone, to lead the Callisburg Wildcats to a 57-54 win over the state-ranked Sacred Heart Tigers Monday at the Holiday Classic.

Callisburg had a 29-28 lead at halftime, but the game was tied 42-42 going into the fourth quarter. In the final period, Dorman scored his 9 points as the Wildcats outscored the Tigers 15-12.

Also for the Cats, Tracey Randle scored 13 points, Jamey Brinlee added 7, Taylor Dorman had 6, Quincy Hough and Ben Fisk each scored 5, Alex Averill added 3 and Logan Eddleman had 2.

For Sacred Heart, John Krawietz had 14 points, Sam Sparkman added 11, Kevin Kulle had 10, Nick Popovich scored 8, Kyle Knabe had 6 and Patrick Mojica added 5.



Forestburg 72

Gainesville JV 65

Cody Reeves scored 25 points and Chad Reynolds added 20 as the Forestburg Longhorns outdistanced the Gainesville Leopards JV 72-65 in the final game of the Holiday Classic Monday night.

The Longhorns hit nine 3-pointers in the contest, two by Reeves, and three by Reynolds and Gunnar Maxwell, who added 18 points.

Gainesville trailed by double digits most of the second half, but used a furious rally in the fourth quarter to pull within 4.

Dakota Nichols scored 15 points to pace the Leopards, while Todd Sweeten added 13, Caleb Covington had 10, Cody Welch scored 9, Patrick Westbrook added 8, Guy Bradley and Justin Dudenhoeffer each scored 4 and Jake Neal had 2.
