VALLEY VIEW — You can’t turn the ball over against good teams and expect to win. The Valley View Eagles found that out during their 45-0 loss to the Callisburg Wildcats Friday in a District 10-2A game at Kassen Field in Valley View.
The Eagles (2-5) had turnovers on seven-straight possessions stretching from the first to the fourth quarters and the Wildcats (5-2) turned those six turnovers into 31 points including 14 points scored directly by the defense.
Both teams had to punt on their first possessions of the game. Unfortunately for Valley View, their punt came with the ball at their own 1-yard line and the Wildcats took over their second possession at the Eagle 28. Seven plays later, Callisburg quarterback Thor Long found receiver Brant English for a 9-yard touchdown. Bobby Dorman’s extra point kick made it 7-0 Callisburg with 4:10 remaining in the first quarter.
The Eagles got a 64-yard kickoff return from Dustyn Whetzel and started their next drive at the Cat 28. They moved the ball down to the 4-yard line, but on third-and-three, Eagle quarterback Scott Willis had a pass picked off in the end zone by Clayton Love who raced 104 yards for another Wildcat touchdown to make it 14-0 with 31 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Valley View’s offense again moved the ball down the field on their ensuing possession. A 23-yard pass from Willis to Taylor Boaz pushed the ball to the Cat 34. Willis followed that with a 20-yard run down to the 14. An errant snap on the next play resulted in an 11-yard loss. On second down, a Willis pass was picked off by Dorman at the 2-yard line, ending another promising Eagle drive.
Callisburg moved the ball out of the shadow of their own goal line thanks to a 22-yard run by Love, but the Wildcats would have to punt four plays later. The Eagles moved the ball from their own 16 out to the 45 thanks to two completions for first downs from Willis to Boaz. But another turnover, this one a fumble, would end the drive and set up the Wildcats at the Eagle 45 with 1:46 remaining in the half.
The Wildcats picked up one first down and had to settle for a 42-yard field goal by Dorman as time expired to push their lead to 17-0 at the half.
Unfortunately for Valley View, their turnover problems didn’t stay in the locker room. On their first offensive possession of the second half, the Eagles set up shop at the 46-yard line thanks to a 40-yard kickoff return by Shelby Ward. Willis then connected with Dustin Tomlinson on a 12-yard pass play and later, Willis found Boaz for 16 yards to move the ball to the Wildcat 17. But on second down, Tracey Randle picked off an Eagle pass at the 9-yard line to end the threat again.
Callisburg then had their most impressive drive of the night. They went 91 yards in eight plays. Long was 5 for 5 passing on the drive as he found three different receivers (Love, Quincy Hough and English). Love added a 21-yard run and Chris Apala followed with a 23-yard run. The final 26 yards came on a pass from Long to an open Hough to make it 24-0 with 4:22 remaining in the third quarter.
The Eagles picked up one first down on their next possession thanks to a 10-yard run by P.J. Voelkel, but another fumble, this one recovered by Kevin Bartley, gave the ball back to the Cats at the Eagle 35. The Wildcats quickly returned the favor though as Long’s second-down pass was picked off by Whetzel.
But Valley View’s turnover woes weren’t over. Two plays later, the Eagles fumbled again and Love recovered for the Wildcats at the Eagle 38. Four plays later, Dorman took a handoff on an end-around and went untouched down the right sideline on a 32-yard run to make it 31-0 with 11:49 remaining in the game.
On the Eagles’ next possession, Voelkel had a 19-yard run, but the next play resulted in a fumbled pitch on an option play and Callisburg’s Chase McCage scooped up the ball and sprinted 49 yards for another Cat touchdown to make it 38-0 with 10:11 remaining.
The Wildcats would add more points on their next possession. Long hit Randle for a 19-yard gain and later, Apala scored from a yard out to push the final margin to 45-0.
Callisburg is now 2-0 in district play and will host Pottsboro for Homecoming next week. Valley View falls to 1-1 in district and has a tough road game at Pilot Point.
