TRENTON — The Lindsay Knights baseball team finished in third place at the Trenton Invitational over the weekend.
After losing their opening-round game to Howe, 4-1, the Knights won the next three, including a 4-2 win ove the S&S; Rams for third place.
In the opening game of the tournament, pitcher Todd Bezner gave up three runs, one earned, and struck out three in the loss. Dax Fleitman had a hit while Dean Fleitman scored the lone run for the Knights.
In the second game, Lindsay (5-1) defeated Leonard 6-1 with pitcher Ryan Haverkamp picking up his first win of the season after tossing four strong innings, allowing only one earned run while striking out three.
Travis Skinner, Frank Cornett and Tyler Hundt each finished with two hits in the game. Skinner scored two runs, Cornett stole two bases while Hundt added a double.
In game three, the Knights defeated host team Trenton by the score of 10-7.
Dean Fleitman picked up his second win of the young season after giving up just three earned runs with one walk and a strikeout.
“Our bats finally came alive against Trenton,” Lindsay Coach Cody Bounds said. “Trenton is a very good baseball team that has been going deep into the playoffs the past few seasons. This was a very big win for this team.
“Our defense was not as good as it can be, but overall I was pleased. The boys competed well and fought hard until the last out.”
Dax Fleitman earned his first save of the year after pitching two innings with two strikeouts.
Every starter had at least one hit in this game with Cornett and Dean Fleitman each finishing 3 for 4 at the plate with two RBI apiece.
Blake Hunter had a double and three RBI while Haverkamp added two hits and two runs scored.
Skinner, Dax Fleitman, Hundt, Madison Parkhill and Bezner each finished with one hit in the game.
In the third-place game, Lindsay defeated S&S; 4-2. Dax Fleitman picked up the win with three strikeouts and walking just two batters.
“This game was a repeat of the Leonard game for us,” Bound said. “We scored three runs in the first inning and then couldn’t get anything else going.”
Bezner pitched three innings and Dylan Hughes got the save after striking out one batter.
Next up for Lindsay will be its own tournament this weekend. First pitch for the Knights will be 6 p.m. Friday.
