CALLISBURG — The high school golf season is in full swing with less than a month until the district tournaments get under way.
The Callisburg Lady Cats knew coming into this season there were some big shoes to fill.
Graduation hit Callisburg in a big way losing five seniors who had been a main stay at the State golf tournament each of the past three years.
Lauren Romines and Taylor Klutts both playing golf at the collegiate level can no longer be depended on to lead the Lady Cats.
“This would seem to be a major road block for most 2A schools,” Lady Cats Coach Randy Romines sad, “but not for Callisburg.”
Tara Wescoat nows takes over the reins being the only senior on this year’s team. The names have changed but the results have not. The Lady Cats have finished second twice and fourth once in early tournaments so far this season. They were beat by Sanger by only three shots and Melissa by 16 strokes — both state tournament participants last year.
Their fourth place finish was in a 5A tournament.
“Last year was last year. We don’t have the real low scores right now but we will get there,” Coach Romines said. “The seniors from last year showed these kids how hard you have to work to be successful. This year’s team understands this and they are willing to put in the time. They will lead by example and show our five freshman this year what it takes to be successful. We will continue to work hard and I don’t see any reason we can’t contend for a state championship at the end of the season.”
Tara Wescoat has led the way for the Lady Cats, carding an 88 and a 91 this season. Madeline Lowe’s best score was a 90. Junior Shay Shaw carded a 92 while Jacklyn Davison’s best outing was a 94.
Other season bests are aa 116 by Aubrey Hitchcock.and a 117 by junior Haley Stone.
