Callisburg at S&S;
Friday, 7:30 p.m.
RECORDS - Callisburg is 7-2 overall (2-2 district); S&S; is 2-7 overall (0-4 district)
LAST WEEK - Callisburg lost to Pilot Point 30-20; S&S; lost to Pottsboro 47-19.
CALLISBURG OUTLOOK - The Wildcats lost to Pilot Point 30-20 last week but still clinched a playoff berth in Class 2A when Pottsboro defeated S&S.; But the Cats will try to enter the playoffs on a high note with a win over the Rams. Callisburg played the No. 7 ranked Bearcats tough last week, but turnovers hurt them. The Wildcats had three interceptions and three fumbles and were held to just 187 yards of total offense. A sloppy, muddy field had something to do with that. The field should be in better shape this week after a week of sunshine. Langston Jones and Bobby Dorman share the area lead in touchdowns scored with 16. Dorman has also thrown 16 touchdown passes at quarterback. Callisburg leads the area in total offense (400.5 ypg) and is averaging 39.4 ppg. The Wildcats will face either Millsap or Jacksboro in the first round of the playoffs.
S&S; OUTLOOK - The Rams have no shot at making the playoffs and will try to get their first District 10-2A win of the season when they host Callisburg. It will be senior night in Sadler. The Rams have played four area teams this season, defeating Collinsville 35-27, losing to Lindsay 56-14, losing to Muenster 26-6 and losing to Valley View 28-19.
PLAYERS TO WATCH - Callisburg: QB Bobby Dorman (6-2, 180), LB Chase McCage (5-10, 200), WR Kevin Bartley (5-9, 160); S&S;: RB Michael Lee (6-0, 185), LB Jacob Aguirre (5-10, 175).
COACHSPEAK - “We will approach this game with much intensity to keep playing at the same level with which we played against Pilot Point.” -- Callisburg coach Jerry Bomar on his team’s approach this week knowing they have already clinched a playoff spot.
Pottsboro at Valley View
Friday, 7:30 p.m.
RECORDS - Pottsboro is 1-8 overall (1-3 district); Valley View is 4-5 overall (1-3 district)
LAST WEEK - Pottsboro defeated S&S; 47-19; Valley View lost to Aubrey 51-7.
POTTSBORO OUTLOOK - Pottsboro, who advanced all the way to the Class 2A state semifinals last season, won their first game of 2009 last week when they hammered S&S; 47-19.
VALLEY VIEW OUTLOOK - The Eagles will try to send their seniors out with a win. Coach Terry Felderhoff says he has talked to his team about playing well and winning for two reasons: send the seniors out with a win and have a positive note to build on through the offseason. Valley View will try to get their offense back on track. They were held to just 42 yards rushing and 60 passing in a 51-7 loss to Aubrey last week. The Eagles are still third in the area in passing offense at 144.9 ypg. Valley View can finish the season 5-5 with a win this week. That is a pretty good feat considering they are one of the smallest Class 2A schools in the state and play in the always tough District 10-2A.
PLAYERS TO WATCH - Pottsboro: DE Malcolm Blanco (6-3, 225), QB Kevin Garcia (5-10, 165), K Cody Parton (5-8, 175); Valley View: QB Scott Willis (5-11, 165), DE Josh Anding (6-5, 220), LB A.J. Kassen (6-1, 180).
COACHSPEAK - “This is always a tough week for the seniors. Those that care and have put in a lot of extra work dread this week and know the clock is winding down. You want them to have a good last week and hopefully go out with a win. These guys have had to finish their high school careers playing some pretty tough competition but have made some great strides in doing so, both physically and mentally. This group will leave some key holes for us to fill when August comes around and they will be missed.” -- Valley View coach Terry Felderhoff on what his seniors have meant to his program.
Collinsville at Lindsay
Friday, 7:30 p.m.
RECORDS - Collinsville is 5-4 overall (2-1 district); Lindsay is 8-1 overall (3-0 district).
LAST WEEK - Collinsville defeated Era 49-12; Lindsay defeated Blue Ridge 37-7.
COLLINSVILLE OUTLOOK - The Pirates played their most complete game of the season last Friday in a 49-12 win over Era. The Collinsville offense racked up 493 yards, the defense caused a couple of turnovers and the kicking game was solid. The Pirates welcomed the return of running back Chris Carney. The junior speedster scored three touchdowns and helped Collinsville rush for 291 yards. Quarterback Cory Ragsdale was 7 of 10 passing for 182 yards. The Pirate defense did yield 248 yards rushing to Era with 245 of those yards coming from Hornet quarterback Trey Dunn. Collinsville has already clinched a playoff berth and will be the Division 1 (big school) representative in the Class A playoffs.
LINDSAY OUTLOOK - The Knights have a chance to win an undisputed district championship with a win against Collinsville and head coach Cody Bounds says that has been one of his team’s goals all year. Lindsay has already clinched a playoff berth and knows they will be in the Division 2 (small school) playoffs, but they want to enter the playoffs with momentum. The Knights had one of their lowest offensive outputs of the season against Blue Ridge (255 yards) but still won 37-7. Four different Lindsay players scored touchdowns. Lindsay leads the area in passing defense (61.4 ypg), total defense (195.5 ypg) and points allowed (10.6 ppg).
PLAYERS TO WATCH - Collinsville: OL Turner Coulson (5-10, 225), LB Scott Ragsdale (5-11, 180), LB Chase Medler (5-10, 170); Lindsay: WR/K Ross Jones (6-4, 165), DL Will Taylor (6-2, 200), OL Colton Hermes (6-5, 200).
COACHSPEAK - “Our game plan will not change at all. We will go in to win the game doing whatever we have to do to get that done.” -- Lindsay coach Cody Bounds on his team’s game plan for the Collinsville game since the Knights have already clinched a playoff berth.
“Our game plan will not change. We will play everyone. If we can pull off a win we would get a part of the district championship.” -- Collinsville coach Danny David on how his team will approach Friday’s game knowing they are already in the playoffs.
Muenster at Era
Friday, 7:30 p.m.
RECORDS - Muenster is 6-3 overall (2-1 district); Era is 7-2 overall (1-2 district).
LAST WEEK - Muenster had a bye; Era lost to Collinsville 49-12
MUENSTER OUTLOOK - The Hornets had a week off last Friday to watch the rest of District 13-A battle it out. What they saw was the resurgence of Collinsville, a team they had beaten a week earlier. Collinsville’s win over Era put the Pirates in the playoffs. Muenster needs a win this week over Era to get in the playoffs themselves. They can also get in if they lose to Era by 10 or less and if Lindsay beats Collinsville this week.
ERA OUTLOOK - Not too often does a team see its quarterback rush for 245 yards, pass for 141 yards and still lose by 37, but that’s what happened to the Hornets last week in a 49-12 loss at Collinsville. Now Era needs to rebound with a playoff berth on the line this week against Muenster. Era can make the playoffs with a win over Muenster, if Collinsville beats Lindsay. If Lindsay defeats Collinsville, then Era needs to beat Muenster by 11 points or more. Friday will be senior night at Era with seven Hornet seniors playing their final home game. Era now leads the area in rushing offense (234.3 ypg), while Dunn is tops in the area in rushing at 108 ypg.
PLAYERS TO WATCH - Muenster: QB Levi Trubenbach (6-2, 190), OL Jeremy Lutkenhaus (6-0, 270), WR Jason Luke (5-8, 130); Era: QB Trey Dunn (5-10, 160), WR Nathan Metzler (5-8, 150), RB Justin Lance (6-3, 190).
COACHSPEAK - “It’s really weird how it is for the final playoff spot and a chance to play Wolfe City for the fourth time in two years. I think it’s a compliment to both Muenster and Era that we are having successful seasons with a chance for a playoff spot. It a tough district, all you want is a chance at the playoffs with a win. I think it will be a close battle to the end, just like last year.” -- Muenster coach Allen Cross on his team facing Era in week ten with a playoff berth on the line for the second straight year.
“I think with it being week ten and playing at home and with the playoffs on the line, our team will be prepared and give their best effort Friday night.” -- Era coach J.D. Henderson on how he expects his team to play Friday in such an important game.
Watauga Harvest at Sacred Heart
Friday, 6 p.m.
RECORDS - Watauga Harvest is 5-4 overall (0-2 district); Sacred Heart is 7-3 overall (2-0 district).
LAST WEEK - Sacred Heart defeated Amarillo Arbor Christian 34-31.
WATAUGA HARVEST OUTLOOK - The Saints were just 2-9 last year but returned 16 seniors from that team. Running backs Cody Huett and Nathan Groover combined to rush for over 1,000 yards last year. Harvest Christian could go winless in district and will still make the playoffs because there are only four teams in the district. No matter what happens this week, they will be the fourth-place team.
SACRED HEART OUTLOOK - The Tigers clinched a district championship with their 34-31 win at Amarillo Arbor Christian last week. Quarterback Matt Hesse had a career day, rushing for 239 yards and passing for 149 more. Receiver John Krawietz caught four passes for 111 yards, while freshman tailback Clay Hogan had 98 yards rushing. Gene Yosten, Jr., added 11 tackles. This will be Sacred Heart’s 11th game of the season. They have not had a week off since starting the season back in August. The Tigers will host a first-round playoff game on Nov. 13 against either The Highlands or Rockwall Christian.
PLAYERS TO WATCH - Watauga Harvest: RB Cody Huett, QB Hayden Howard, OL Forrest Miller; Sacred Heart: WR John Krawietz (6-4, 170), QB Matt Hesse (5-8, 170), DL Gene Yosten (6-1, 200).
COACHSPEAK - “This is very much a trap game for us. We don’t want to lose any momentum. We have to stay so focused and keep the momentum going. We don’t want to look ahead.” -- Sacred Heart coach Dale Schilling on this week’s game with Watauga Harvest.
Sanger at Whitesboro
Friday, 8:00 p.m.
RECORDS - Sanger is 4-5 overall (1-3 district); Whitesboro is 2-7 overall (0-4 district)
LAST WEEK - Sanger lost to Prosper 41-21; Whitesboro lost to Celina 38-7.
SANGER OUTLOOK - The Indians have no shot at the Class 3A playoffs, but will try and wrap up fourth place in District 9-3A with a win. A fourth-place finish in this district is nothing to be ashamed of with Argyle, Prosper and Celina all being ranked at some point this season. Sanger’s only district win was a 34-13 win over Gainesville on Oct. 16.
WHITESBORO OUTLOOK - The Bearcats will try to send their seniors off with a win and pick up their first District 9-3A win of the season at the same time. Whitesboro has not scored more than seven points since week four and they have only scored more than 15 points once this season. They average 9.9 points per game on offense and allow 28.7 ppg.
PLAYERS TO WATCH - Sanger: RB Tyler Hodges (6-0, 180), DL Kyle Carrow (6-1, 240), NG Mark Roberson (6-0, 220); Whitesboro: LB Ethan Shadden (6-2, 212), OL Jonathan Jones (5-11, 267), CB Cameron Clark (5-10, 153).
Saint Jo at Waxahachie Advantage
Tonight, 7 p.m.
RECORDS - Saint Jo is 6-3 overall (2-0 district); Waxahachie Advantage is 0-9 overall.
LAST WEEK - Saint Jo defeated Greenville Phoenix 73-6.
SAINT JO OUTLOOK - The Panthers wrapped up the district championship with a 73-6 thumping of Greenville Phoenix last Saturday. Not too often will you see a team have 168 yards of total offense and still score 73 points, and all that came in one half. Six Saint Jo touchdowns came on the ground, three came via the pass, and they also had a kick return and fumble return for touchdowns. The Panthers will receive a bye in the first round of the Six-Man Division I playoffs and their first playoff game will be the weekend of Nov. 20. This week is a short week of preparation for the Panthers, who played on Saturday night and travel to Waxahachie for a Thursday game this week.
WAXAHACHIE ADVANTAGE OUTLOOK - Advantage has not won a game this year. They are an independent team that does not play in a district, so they would not be eligible for the playoffs.
PLAYERS TO WATCH - Saint Jo: RB Jake Ellingwood (6-0, 180), DE Joey Lindenborn (5-9, 160), NG Richard James (5-10, 195).
COACHSPEAK - “The short week does provide certain obstacles. It does not give players with minor injuries as much time to recover. It changes the routine the players are used to each week as well. But it increases our focus since we have limited time to prepare. Also, it gives us experience with schedule changes which could be possible in the playoffs. Overall, I don’t believe this week will hurt our team at all.” -- Saint Jo coach Chad Tallon on the pitfalls of a short week.
