POTTSBORO — The Muenster Hornets have the ultimate bragging rights over the Wolfe City Wolves.
Friday’s 46-28 victory over Wolfe City marked the second time this season Muenster has defeated the Wolves, and is their fourth victory over the school in the past two seasons.
Both teams met twice last season and twice this season, once in the regular season and once in the playoffs.
Muenster (8-3) used a balanced offense and key turnovers to fuel Friday’s win in Pottsboro at Cardinals Stadium.
Up 28-0 early in the second quarter, it appeared Muenster could put the game in cruise control, but the turnover bug struck the Hornet’s offense as the team coughed up the ball six times, including four interceptions. Those six turnovers led to 14 points for the Wolves.
Muenster led 28-13 at halftime and took an eventual 40-13 lead in the third quarter before Wolfe City countered with 15 unanswered points thanks to a 57-yard interception return for a score and a 57-yard run by Devlon Williams, cutting the lead to 40-28 after a successful two-point conversion.
The Hornets eventually put the game out of reach when running back Chris Valliere scored from a yard out with 3:07 left in regulation. Valliere finished with 106 yards on the ground on 25 carries and added one catch for six yards in the win.
Muenster scored often and easily in the first quarter as Trubenbach and the offense was clicking on all cylinders, taking a 28-0 lead within the first 12 minutes of the game.
Trubenbach’s favorite target of the night was Eric Hellman, who scored the first of his three touchdowns from 55 yards out to take an early 7-0 lead.
The Hornet defense got in on the action on Wolfe City’s ensuing possession when Dalton Koelzer picked up a Wolfe City fumble and rumbled 70 yards for the score, giving his team a 13-0 lead after a missed extra point.
The Hellman and Trubenbach connection connected again late in the first quarter on an 18-yard pass and catch. Trubenbach scored on a two-point conversion to take a 21-0 lead.
Receiver Jason Luke finally got in on the action in the second quarter when Trubenbach found the team’s leading receiver for a 19-yard score with 10 minutes left in the half.
But from their Wolfe City seemingly found a way to creep back in the game scoring two touchdowns to close out the first half. Both 5-yard touchdown runs, the first by Devlon Wortham and the other by quarterback Caleb Fuller.
In the second half, Trubenbach found his rhythm again with his receivers, hitting Hellman for a 65-yard touchdown halfway through the third quarter. Following that was a 28-yard touchdown from Trubenbach to Luke, extending the lead to 40-13.
Trubenbach finished with 311 yards and five touchdowns while Hellman caught three of those touchdown passes and amassed 169 receiving yards on six catches.
The Hornets will now face Perrin-Whitt Friday at 7:30 p.m., in Springtown.
