PROSPER — The Gainesville Leopards opened the Prosper Tournament Monday with a big win over Pilot Point, 63-45, but lost their second game to the Plano junior varsity 52-42.
Against Pilot Point, the Leopards took an early 17-6 lead and a 35-21 lead into the half. Gainesville stymied Pilot Point in the second half, outscoring the Bearcats 28-25.
Harold Wills scored a game-high 21 points while Kenyon Morgan added 14.
Others scoring for the Leopards were Patrick Westbrook with 9 points, Kielyn Lewis with 6 and Caleb Covington and Cody Welch each added 4.
Against Plano, Gainesville struggled in the first half, scoring jus 15 points to Plano’s 28. Gainseville came back strong in the second half, outscoring its opponent 27-14, but the deficit was too much for the Leopards to overcome.
For Gainesville (8-7), Wills and Lewis each combined for 10 points to lead the team while Welch added 5 and Covington and Denzel Johnson each added 4.
The Leopards play again today at 11:30 a.m.
Lady Eagles rout Dodd City
TRENTON — The Valley View Lady Eagles took care of business in the first round of the Trenton Holiday Tournament Monday with an 81-23 win over Dodd City.
Taylor Dowd exploded for 33 points wile Taylor Felderhoff scored 13 points with 5 rebounds, 8 steals and 4 assists.
“This was a good win for us,” Valley View coach Jeff Percell said. “To come out after the holiday break and play really well was exciting to see. Hopefully, we can continue to play with the same level of intensity the rest of this tournament and on into our district schedule.”
The Lady Eagles led 15-8 after the first quarter and the then the rout began as Valley View scored 22 points to Dodd City’s 2 in the second frame to take a 27-10 halftime lead.
Valley View (10-6) outscored its opponent 24-13 in the second half.
Kinzee Pierce added 12 points with 7 assists while Lauren Holt chipped in 8. Mercedy Burnett scored 6 points while Chelsie Cloer added 5 and Joezy Harrison finished with 4.
